Why do MotoGP riders stick their legs out before turns?

I watched a Q&A session with Rossi on TV last summer. He was asked about it, and he said that it helps to transfer weight to the front of the bike, but keeps that extra ballast low. If the rider were to weight the front, but place that ballast high, the rear of the bike has tendency to lift off the ground.

Random question as I sit here watching the MotoGP race:

As the title says, I was wondering why MotorGP riders, and presumably others who know what they're doing, stick their legs out before dropping into a turn?

Thanks,

Brandon

What your all talking about here is "the Rossi Leg Wavye" Speaking with experience I have been riding motocross and I have been doing AMA track days with my Gixxer K8 since 2008. Yes Rossi was the first to start using the Leg Method. Other riders did some how remove their feet off the pegs. Rossi was the first to make it part of his own riding style. I know this Bc I'm a Rossi fanatic.
On to the next. - The truth is there is no real explanation to what the Style of the Leg dose. It has been tested and it dose not make him faster nor able to slow Down quicker. The Data was Tested on Laps he used and Laps he didnt use his Leg Method, Rossi's team members found absolut no diffeance in Braking or corner entery or ecelaration. The reason he dose it simple the same reason I do it... Within different riders After riding hard and pushing your bike to the limit for a period of time the Legs get Cramps and have involuntary contractions they become uncomftoble and pain starts to bother the rider. This pain is happening form having repetitive movement of the legs in similar positions.

Now to my explanation. When is the only time and the best time you can remove the leg in a race your trying to win a podium in heavy perssure all out pushing to the limit? The only time and the best time would be right when you begin the braking before a corner and the leg waved must be the one on the same side of the turn.

To end my explanation. With doing the "Rossi Leg Wave" the most important thing is your Legs are getting maximum blood flow to the bottom of the feet and back to the heat in the Rossi Wave posotion. It alwos him to stretch his Leg in the the best way and relax the pain freshen it up. That's the only way. And MotoGP should higher me.
