Whats cooler, leather, nylon...

I picked up a ballistic nylon Joe Rocket jacket in the spring, which I liked for its lightness and inbuilt panels on the back and elbows...

But as things warm up, this sucker doesn't breathe at all -- being black doesn't help either.

Is this as good as it gets, or will going to leather somehow be cooler?

I'm not sure leather will be much (if at all) cooler. Your best bet, if this is important to you, is to buy a jacket that is full mesh or has mesh panels on it. When it's 30 degrees outside, you'll be hard-pressed to find a jacket that won't make you overheat in slow or stopped traffic.

I have mostly white perforated leather. It works for me.

ICON VEST YO.

Seriously though...sweat a little or be safe. It's entirely up to you.

What you've got is a good balance of safety and cooling. Switching to leather won't help you at all.

I use the Icon ARC Mesh jacket for temps. 21 deg cel and higher. I finf that on really hot days 30 deg an higher, I still find it really hot. But as soon as you start moving at reasonable speed, I get cooled off quickly. Too be honest I find the heat build up in my helmet alot more uncomfortable than anything else.

It's true. I'll have to wait until it gets hot before I will know if my jacket is o.k. or not, but it's been fine so far.

It also depends on your tolerance for heat, and the immunity that you've built up.

If it does get too hot, I have a core cooler that I can use.

There are some leather jackets that ZIP off to reveal mesh underneath. Ones like Joe Rocket Super Ego still keep a leather strip on the arms when the main front and rear leather is zipped off.

What's cooler? Cooler as in looks or temperature?

I say squid is cooler in both looks and temperature.

In all seriousness, I have a Joe Rocket textile and it does get hot but as 250R-ICE said, as soon as you start moving (20kmh+), you'll be fine.

Any textile mesh jacket will do. There's nothing that will keep you cooler than that.
Leather is definitely not the option even though it offers the best protection. Perforated leather is not too bad but will not compare with mesh jackets.
Look for a jacket with lots of vents. On the sleeves, chest, back, etc.

The problem with mesh is some of it shreds or melts quickly. In that case you might as well go squid.

The majority of riders I've been seeing around squid it up royally in their t-shirts and shorts.

I have a nylon mesh Dainese jacket and find it pretty hot. It's also black. The white fully perfed Dainese 1-piece is a bit cooler. I'm sure this has everything to do with colour over material.

IMO, the best thing to wear is a compression fit undersuit underneath whichever jacket you wear. It really does wick away sweat quite well and keep your temp down. E.g., A couple weeks ago I was out on a scorcher of a day and when the bike was actually moving, I found I was actually getting chilly because of the undersuit. So give that a try and see if it helps.

I wear perforated leather as soon as it gets warm, not bad for hot as long as you are moving and maximum protection. The jacket I am currently using is a Astar NYC jacket and leather pants.
