what to get?

Ninja 500 is a sweet beginner bike. Bullet proof motors easy to move around.

Ive had 2 of them. One was my first bike that I later sold. Then my GF got her license so we got another one.

Excellent machines with tons of spare parts around and reliable forums.
 
Unless you are a flyweight I'd opt for the 500 especially in the GTA - less gear box stirring and likely bit more oomph for the 400 series.
That's assuming you want a sport seating ride.
There are others out there with more upright seating.
 
I started out on the 250 (this is my first full season) and it is a great bike for the city traffic. I got on the 401 yesterday and felt like I needed just a bit more power, like MacDoc said above, to feel truly comfortable. I think the heavier 500cc would give a more stable feeling.

Also, like stated above, there is a lot of gear play on the 250.

i rode a 250 before, but not ninja.
i agree, i had to change a lot of gears at every stop light.
Wondering if ninja is the same? (mostly need to ride at high revs?)


i am about 175lbs.

You don't need to start with a 250 or 125... especially if you weigh more than 190 lbs. I was 18 when I got my m2 and started on a 2012 gsxr 600.. Did not drop it, crash it, or kill myself.. A 600 is enough power for you to learn how to ride on and have fun. Remember, a 250, although a great bike to start on, is not your only choice. People start on 650s, 600s, 636s... Nothing wrong.
 
Personally I would go Ninja 650. Fuel Injected and its very beginner friendly. Unfortunately people seem to be asking way too much for used 650's, but that is also the case with used 250's.
 
If you want my honest opinion, go grab yourself a used gixxer, cbr or r6 (600_
 
Generally speaking a super sport will kill you on insurance. A good friend has a ninja 500. Can't recall the year but it's not ancient. He loves it and 4 seasons later not one issue with the bike.
 
is there a way to see how many speeding tickets i have for last 3 years?
i am thinking i have 2. But wonder if 1 of them is expired now.
