Hi guys looking at buying a VW trike but before I do I’ve called around and so far found no one who wants to insure it or certify it any advice from someone who has gone through this would be great thanks BTW I’m just outside of Orangeville
Before thinking of insurance, it'll need to be made street legal. Getting a VIN maybe next to impossible - honestly I have no clue about that. Typically if mods are not that extensive, then a VIN can be generated, but a VW trike? Might be SOL.
If you do happen to get a VIN, then an insurance company might insure it, depending on their risk appetite. My experience in insurance (large company), no underwriter will want to assume that risk, even with a valid VIN.
I would suspect it is 30 to 50 years old and has not been licensed recently.
If the current owner does not have the registration RUN AWAY!!
It has 3 wheels so it is a MOTORCYCLE and would need to be inspected to meet 3 wheeled motorcycle standards
by an authorized motorcycle inspection site.
Even if you could get it registered trying to insure it is still going to be an issue.
A home build is a square peg you are trying to fit in a round hole.
Insurance policies are AI (aka Artificial Stupidity) generated.
Common sense is no longer a factor but its about checking all the boxes.
The Insurance Industry is facing a huge decline in humans with working knowledge.
If in doubt decline the policy.
It was last on the road 5 years ago it has a cb750 vin tag on it yet there is nothing cb750 on it I would have it titled as a homebuilt but then I was told that would make a hole lot of other issues with Saftey items and maybe emissions it’s a cool trike but not looking too good to get plated or insured I might pass on buying it
I have a buddy who has a beautiful custom VW trike and he hasn't ridden it in years. I think difficulty (impossibility?) in getting insurance is the reason. I'll ask him. I've been a VW aficionado all my life. They are great. I have a "64 Meyers Manx.
Yes please ask him about his possible insurance issues, I’d like to pick this trike up but from what I’m hearing is a lot of BS to get it on the road thanks
He's not the most articulate chap. He said talk to "Ontario Insurance." And he said it's because of insurance that his trike has been sitting for 5 years. I'm very sad to advise you to beware, because I love old VWs.
