Use cellphone instead of Scala or other BT

So I was looking at communicators, and got the idea that since they sell the accessory kits pretty cheap I might be able to plug into my Samsung Galaxy S and see if that'd do the trick.

I'm not sure if I'd need an app to get this to work or what would be required...

If anyone has any thoughts on this, let me know, I'll try and see if I can get something rigged up that works on our phones and then we can all stop spending money on BT and instead put it into our bikes as gas!

(Didn't find anything on the interweb or the forum about this, but I'm sure someone has to have tried it. Lessons learnt?)

while a good idea.. i cant see how it can be implemented in a good way.

Using 3g/cellular data - you would always have to be in cell coverage.
Roaming rates would kill you, or if using data network isntead, it would eat up your monthly data usage limit pretty quickly. Would not be usable in the states without buying a prepaid US simcard.

If using wifi or bluetooth to make a little ad-hoc network, the range would be crap, and the link would often break as you got further away from ur riding partner. Dont know of a mobile app that supports this type of chat, without the need for an internet connection.

For the cost of a motorcycle specific comm set.. its just better to spend 200 bucks and be done with it.

I was thinking primarily rider to pax with bluetooth between their two phones. I think that class one devices have a range of appx 100m, so while it could work between bikes that isn't what I had envisioned.

And I expect I'd end up having to write the code for it, just wondering if anyone has already tried it.
