Tires and age

I bought Avon AM26 for my bike and i ordered them via GP Bikes. The person i spoke to was able to match the price from petes.

Long story short, i went to pick them up after waiting 2 business days. I looked at the tires and not only did it not have the brand new unused line marking but they also were from mid '12 and early '13.

Was I stupid for grabbing them? Theperson at the counter said they barely make these models so it explains why one is from '12

That seems recent enough to me. AM26 is for vintage bikes, makes sense that volume would be low, especially at a place like GP.

I don't get it. What is wrong with mid 2012?

Depending on the usage and care and storage you will provide it, it can last 10 years easily - to 2022 (the 10 years chronological age before replacement is the recommendation from some manufacturers like Continental).

So, ask yourself - will you wear them out before 10 years? Probably yes, so you will be fine.

There's no such thing as an unused line markings. They are tread slab lines or numbers and the tire doesn't have to have them. Factories mark them that way to avoid mix ups.

I wouldn't worry about paying full price for a 2-3 year old tire even, they are still as good as "fresh from the oven." Up to 5 years, I'd get a discount. Over 5 years, I am not interested. It may be good or not but rubber does dry out, even if stored properly. My workplace tells us to try not to stock anything over 2.5 years old and not to sell anything over 3.

people here read and believe too much ******** and then ask dumb questions.

I don't think they realize bike tires aren't made in Canada. They sit on a ship for a few months, AFTER they've sat in warehouse for a few months. They don't just manufacture a batch and send it out at the end of the week...

So OP ask yourself..."Is it likely for these tires to only be 6-8 months old"?....NO ****ing way. Quit worrying and start riding.

From the manufacturer's website:

What is the age limit of Motorcycle Tyres?

The British Rubber Manufacturers Association advise tyres should be used within 6 years of manufacture. The tyre should then be removed after a total of 10 years. Avon recommend tyres should be used within 5 years of manufacture. The tyre should then be removed after a total of 7 years.

This is another example of a manufacturer recommending you remove your tires at 7 years (earlier than the recommendation from their national "Rubber Manufacturers Association"). Why? Do they want to avoid liability? Or is it just marketing, so you buy tires more often?

;)

Thanks. If the rubbers are good with no signs of cracks ill ride em up to 8 y/o (only on my cage tho. Too much risk on a 2 wheeler).

The reason for my concern is that ive never bought tires 8 months older than the the date. I wasnt sure but you guys definitely cleared it up for me.

I ended up wiping the tires with brake cleaner to "remove" that slippery coating. See pic.

Grip is outstanding.

Thats what i was told at sohc4 when i inquired about tires.

My old tires were made in 2001. Bridgestone spitfire. I wanted to ride with them because the threads are still good. But they started developing cracks at certain areas. So i went with these.
