These speed limit reductions are getting out of hand

80s are becoming 70-60. Most 50s are now 40s and 40s went down to 30s. And surprise surprise a speed camera installed right after the speed limit reduction. Niagara region all country roads are now 70. This is only going to get worse.

I was talking to a cop a few eeks ago and he agreed it's all about the money. Municipalities are pushing back on Ford's anti camera stance.

I assume the cameras have adjustments to allow X KPH over the limit. If a new special interest project comes up they just tweak the dial to get a few more bucks.

My neighbors were asking me if I'd support "traffic calming" measures on my street (it leads to a park and lots of morons speed). I told them I would, as long as it wasn't speed cameras, but to be careful what they wished for because we might be trading one thing for another. Next thing you know, there are two new stop signs erected 50 m apart at the intersections to either side of my house. My one neighbor who lives at one of the intersections is ******, because the speeders are still speeding up to the stop, but now drag launching from there to the next, and so on. Coming home late at night with my Termi's and dry clutch, I used to kill the motor at the beginning of the street and coast onto my driveway, but now I have to keep it running to make the stop. Oh well. They can't say I didn't warn them...

Anyone paying attention or who has attended city council meetings knows that the cities have a war against cars. The speed limits lowering were also totally predictable. Apparently idiots that can't avoid walking directly in front of moving vehicles trump the point of having a road in the first place, which is efficient mobility. Downtown Kingston is mostly 40kph now and there's 30kph zones which are so slow that none of my vehicles will allow me to set cruise control, meaning that variability of throttle application forces me to go through those zones with concern of getting a photo ticket or drive UNDER 30kph which is even more painful.

And "won't somebody think of the children?" is all I get out of left-leaning Citiots.

Oh sure, they tout their public transit, but frankly, it sucks.
My daughter commutes from Burlington to Union Stn. On the GO train.
Between the cancelations, last minute schedule changes and track delays she often finds herself either stranded or terribly delayed.
It isn't cheap either...
I don't even have to pay to use the GO and I'd rather drive...

The previous Orangeville Council changed the default town speed limit to 40 kph. However, they left a few main streets at 50 kph. At the time one councillor was quoted as saying it should be painful to drive across town. These are the kind of people who get elected and then try to implement their personal agendas.

The current council was looking at speed cameras on two of our streets which are now 40 kph because, you know, think of the children. Only one of the streets has a school and neither one met the warrants for any kind of speed control. Thankfully Dougie threw a wrench into that idea. I asked our Deputy Mayor if 30 kph limits will be coming to Orangeville, to which he replied that is not their plan. Somehow I don't believe him now that the speed cameras are off the table.

Now that speed cameras are off the table, there is no compelling reason (cough, money) to lower the speed limits more. It is strange how closely speed limits and income are correlated.

As for the stop signs installed near Relax, that's a crock of (*&(*&. Stop signs are not allowed to be used for speed control, they are supposed to be used when there is sufficient cross traffic to prevent safely joining the main road. That would be another easy place for douggie to attack as so many municipalities are throwing up dozens of stop signs without the proper justification (and if the studies were done, they would clearly show most of them are explicitly in contravention of policy).

Parents street had a small mostly old British sportscars shop at the end. It was originally a box factory. The owner used to test drive the cars at speed down the street which had no speed bumps or stop signs past a children's park. Residents asked for a single stop sign at the intersection so that the children could get to the park safely. City instead, did a year long assessment, following which they put in speed bumps along the shop's street and a stop sign on the other street. Nobody on the street wanted that. Shop is long gone now, and the residents are still living with the mess. I'm the only one that's ever stopped for that sign, as the bar is 30 feet from the corner and there are cars parked on both sides.

Make speed limits superficially low, collect money. When society follows the rules and no more money comes in, 'think of the children' and make the limits even lower to collect more money.
Stop signs are stupid. A yield sign is completely adequate. Stop if you need to, don't if you don't.

With projections saying the GTA population will top 10.5M by 2046, 30kph will be the "good ole days". And the under the 401 Ford tunnel will be several decades from beginning construction....maybe. How will I get downtown for the this time for sure, farewell tours by the Stones and Who?

Force bad drivers into tiny cars so they likely die in a crash and driving improves. As it is, the worst drivers in NA keep buying bigger vehicles so they win in the crashes they cause.

I wish this really was the case but I get people pulling in front of my onrushing 8,000lb+ diesel truck all the time. It's 8' wide, 7' tall and 23' long and they act like I was in the GTI or something. In the 911 they rarely do, which is just inexplicable (maybe they think I'm always going crazy fast which is often true away from the primary roads).
