animation shows you where rain is heading so yes you can tell the future
I've mentioned this before, but their animated prediction models need a lot more work before they can be considered accurate... most times, their cloud model's movement and formation/dissipation is completely wrong (laughable some times!).
Their guess is as good as anyone's who has an unobstructed view of the sky, and a general idea of which direction the wind is going.
Conversely; when they used to provide those 3-4 hours of previous data, you could then zoom out on the map (really far out, width-wise viewing from Wisconsin to Vermont), and get an idea of how the ENTIRE system was moving, and how the great lakes would either break up the system, or make it worse... it would then be easy to guess when it would rain and for how long over then next 8-10 hours.
