The hands go completely numb after riding especially on the highway. Is this sensation normal for entry level riders and If so how is it prevented?

It's caused from the vibration of the bike and holding on too tight(white knuckling). Try to squeeze the tank with your legs and putting less weight on your handle bars.

Very normal for newbs:) A good thing to remember while riding is to have a nice relaxed grip even when it's windy on the highway. When holding the bars, pretend you are holding an egg you don't want to drop or squeeze hard enough to break.

I always ride with a death grip but I never suffer from numbness.

Check the basics, like chain and tire condition.

If what Raf says doesn't help, you could try bar ends to reduce the vibrations
