The cursed USS Harry S. Truman

I'm sure we've discussed some of these earlier events individually in the past, but line them up together and it starts to seem like the aircraft carrier is cursed or haunted.

December 22, 2024: USS Gettysburg shoots down an F/A-18F from the Truman in a friendly fire incident

February 12, 2025: Truman collides with a Panamanian merchant vessel

April 28, 2025: Truman loses an F/A-18E overboard while it was being moved below deck

May 6, 2025: F/A-18F falls in the sea after "arrestment failure"

Counting the damage to the Panamanian ship, this is gotta be what, a quarter billion dollars in losses over half a year?

FIL at one point was the navigation officer on a Canadian aircraft carrier . Pre amalgamation of the forces , the navy ran the ship and the airforce ran the planes . Airforce used Loran electronic navigation since they really wanted to know where the ship was when planes came back . The Navy used trigonometry, he knew where the ship was three hours ago. He would spend an hour on calculations, then walk across the hall to the airforce office point at the map and say “ think we are here” , they would point and say “ actually right here , right now” . That’s how his relief officer put the ship on a beach near Nantucket. Only missed by ten nautical miles …..

***UPDATE***

A miss will now be considered as good as ten nautical miles going forward, up from the previous (standard) mile. Thank you for your co-operation.

The YT crowd would , if your deployed in the Red Sea and under pressure round the clock , stuff is going to happen. And if you run as much equipment as the US navy , hard not to have an operational challenge or three .

While the hits have been embarrassing, they are about $1M per day. What is the normal operational budget? 6300 staff on board, that's about $1M per day in salary if average salary is $50K.
