TDMM cancellation due to non-payment

Hi,

I just got a letter stating that my insurance is being cancelled due to non-payment as I had no clue it was bouncing. I recently switched bank accounts

I talked to an agent, and he couldn't give me a proper answer regarding what would happen to my rates upon new contract.

Q1 - What's the surcharge ? And for how long is the new rate in effect ?
Q2 - Are the other insurance companies aware of my cancellation if I tried to switch ? I think they ask "have you ever had a policy cancellation due to xyz?" Correct ?

Thanks in advance.

I just talked to another agent, and he said I would get an increase of $50-$100 on the total annual number.

That's comforting after reading this:

TD insurance cancelled my policy for "non-payment"(automatic withdraw) I paid the next day and got a policy termination letter no warning or anything. my rates went from $1200 a year for 2 cars to quotes of over $6000 a year I asked TD if I could pay the year up front and they said they could at $4500 a year. I had no convictions. This is HWY robbery!! IF WE ARE FORCED BY LAW TO HAVE INSURANCE THE FED AND PROV GOV SHOULD BE ENSURING THINGS LIKE THIS DON'T HAPPEN. What happened to me is fraud!! someone has been or is being paid off to allow this to happen to innocent Canadians.

from what I know...once you are cancelled...you are screwed. Even if you go with another insurance company its one thing that they check for....so you can't lie . If it hasn't gone through yet make it right, do anything you can not to let this happen

maybe I spoke out of turn then. I it happened to me with my truck insurance many years ago....took me a long time to get the rate back down

had the same problem before 2 years ago (with desjardins).. but now i got new policy from TDMM I told them and they also verified in their records but my rate didnt go up, dont know why.

What happened for the 2 years in between ?

TDMM also said that there is a possibility, although not very likely, that rates may not be effected at all.

Reminds me of this:

I'm with TD also. They allow 2 missed payments in every 12 months. 3rd one is bye bye. I have all my auto. Withdrawal dates in my calendar phone. So the day it's due I can make sure it's there for them to take.
Sadly insurance companies where the pants in driving and home department in this house.

Do people not pay attention to who is coming and going to their bank accounts? Wish i had that kind of money...

^^ In my situation, I recently opened a fee-less account at PC, and didn't pay attention to what was going on with the old account with TD and my payments bounced 3times in about 20days time, along with $45.00 NSF x3.

I had one non-payment and got a registered letter threatening termination etc. etc.

When I called, I was told cancellations have rougly the same risk increase as an at-fault single vehicle accident.

I was cancelled by TD Insurance once for non-pay over a matter of $4. Ironically, that $4 shortfall was a result of a new fee structure being charged to my TD bank account. I was unemployed at the time but still keeping up with payments and this $4 POS has cost me thousands for the last 4 years... and I'm still paying for it.

It is actually worse than having an at-fault accident (according to my quotes) with the exception that it supposedly drops off your record after 3 years (which I think is BS because it's been over 3 yrs and I'm still being raped). Do whatever you can to rectify the issue now.

Add overdraft coverage to the bank account bill get auto-paid from. It is free until you use it. Or, check bank balance more often than every 3 weeks. They attempted 3 withdrawals over a 20 day period, so you did not check in those 3 weeks.

Not sure if that's in response to me or the OP. In my case, account balance was checked a couple days before they attempted to withdraw funds and they only made one attempt. Bank fee was levied within that time. I had/have OD protection but was unemployed at the time and right at the limit. What I should have done was make sure the account was over-funded but, again, unemployment sucks and existing bills don't go away after being laid off.

The post was mostly a global comment, with the last part in reply to the OP.

What I did many years ago was to evaluate what my average monthly traffic was in regards to bank activity. I just about always use banking for all money transactions. Rarely have cash on me. Due to that, getting the average monthly bank activity gave me a good idea what I would need for 3 months of no income. I asked the bank to give me overdraft protection in the amount of 3 months average activity.

This needs to be done when you do not need it. The bank will happily give you the overdraft protection if you have not needed it in the last year or so. I made that change 20 years ago, and every 5 years I have re-assessed and asked for adjustments to be made. It is also a good idea to set up a line of credit as soon as you can, but, do not use it like a credit card. It should be meant to be a safety net, not a noose.

I had something similar happen many moons ago. I had lost my job and knew I would not be able to make my monthly insurance payments. So, I called the insurance company and talked with an agent. I told them my info, my policy number and the date I wanted to cancel on. She recorded all the information and we concluded the conversation. This was my first policy so I had no clue I was supposed to do anything else. Apparently, In order to officially cancel an insurance policy with the company at the time, I had to do it in writing. I did not know this nor did the agent on the phone tell me this was something that needed to be done. So two weeks goes by and they try to withdraw the money from my account ( I was setup for payments each month). With no money, the payment bounced. My bank called me right away to notify me and I called the insurance company right away. That is when I found out I was supposed to cancel in writing and that my policy was not actually canceled from the phone conversation a week or two before. The agent on the phone did not tell me this. Serious. So I rectified the situation by driving to the insurance company with a note that exact moment. Not even 1 day late on my payment and the insurance company put a 'missed payment' on my history, charged me 50$ fee and told me I needed to make the "missed" payment or they would cancel my policy. Keep in mind I just canceled it with the written notice like a day prior. So I jump through hoops for them to understand the situation and they assured me the policy was canceled BUT, next month, the payment tries coming out again. To which the bank does not call me and the insurance company is left trying to withdraw the money 3 different times and then canceling my "policy" (a policy that was already canceled in writing). So my bank then calls me again telling me I owe them 60$ for 3 bounced payment attempts for the insurance. That is when I realized they didn't actually cancel my policy (even tho it was in writing now). So the 3rd phone call to the insurance company finally got them to understand that I wanted the policy cancelled but they now had the 'cancelled policy' on my record. Nothing I could do to change it. I did everything short of taking them to court but never could get it removed. It cost me 1000's of dollars because of that first agents mistake. I paid dearly for that. If you can, fix it right away. don't bother trying to talk to them because all the insurance companies wants is your money anyway they can take it.

Every insurance policy I have had in the last 38 years all said cancellation must be done in writing. They even gave me a template to use in the insurance package they sent me when my policy was either purchased, or renewed. In every case this template was not hidden within the legal talk of the policy, it was a single page with just the cancellation request. That page however was within the pages of the policy proof of insurance "cards".
When you sign the insurance policy you are signifying that you have read the policy and agree with its terms. I seem to recall having one policy that said simply making a payment would be used as your agreement with the terms of the policy.
Did you happen to try going to the Insurance Bureau of Canada? You should also see them listed in your policy as the people to see about non-resolvable issues with the insurance company.

I'm in progress of getting quotes atm, I will report back with results.

TDMM said that they may not be able to insure me for the car again due to cancellation, but since my 3 bouncing payments were for 1 specific payment only, I may have a chance. I'm waiting for the mail to come in, so I can request a quote.

Meanwhile, Desjardins quoted me for my 2009 Ford Escape, $193/month. The agent said that the quote would be $135 if I didn't have a cancellation due to non-payment situation.

Statefarm quoted for $520/month.

TDMM with bike-home-car bundle used to be $112/month for car only.

Any other companies I should be looking at for the car ? I'm 25, had G-class for 6yrs, no records/claims.

I had a cancellation due to no payment... Didn't affect my rate one bit. All they do now is tell me to pay everything up front... which is what I did anyway.
