Taxes

You should link the thread to Service Ontario so they can answer this for you with a professional response.

a friend sold his bandit to a buddy a couple of yrs ago and when they went to the MTO to pay the taxes etc. the woman behind the counter actually told them to write the reciept for less than the actual purchase price so they could save some money. so they ended up paying tax on 50 bucks.

Huh?
More than 50 per cent of laws are "stupid laws", but I don't think they're meant to be broken:

Could I go to jail if I am found guilty of tax evasion or tax fraud?
Yes, incarceration is a possibility if found guilty of tax evasion or tax fraud. Under the Income Tax Act and the Excise Tax Act, the Canada Revenue Agency has various civil and criminal actions it can take which can lead to monetary fines, penalties and even prison time.
More:
An individual is guilty of a summary offense and can face a fine between $1,000 and $25,000. A judge may also sentence the offender to up to twelve months of incarceration

If saving $26 means that much - go for it. Otherwise, pay the piper for "his" stupid law(s).

They have to prove you paid more. If you pay cash, there is no way they can prove you did not pay more. If the seller drops a dime on Revenue Canada, you are screwed.

The GST (thanks Tories) used to exempt from used sales, then the HST (thanks again, Tories) got added to used vehicles , at the insistence of the Dealership lobby.

I have no problem with fair taxation, but a $15,000 bike after a few resells will have generated $5000 or more in taxes.

There is NO such thing as fair taxation.
Income tax was initiated to pay for WW1. It was only going to last as long as it took to pay for the war, then get buried.
There was no 'sales tax'.
Then greed stepped in.
Here we stand, almost 100 yrs later with govt's that are afraid to increase taxes lately because of the uproar, so all money grabs by the govt is being re-named "fees".
Think about it.

I'll pay the 13 cents, some poor Senators and MPs are drinking orange juice in hotels from concentrate -that's just sad.

You still need to get it notarized, or you'll be paying the ministry's set price on a car or truck. (Motorcycles not included).
I've done a few within family. Cost me $10 each time at the lawyer's office. His secretary is a Notary Public - she signs the paperwork - I go to the MTO. Never a problem.

I am willing to bet that 98.5% of used bike sales, people don't pay the full tax, of which 75% of them declare only 10% of the actual purchase price.

You can get things notarized for free at legal aid offices. I used to get it done at the one at the Oshawa Center all the time. Now it's a goodlife fitness, not sure where the legal aid office went :(

Tories? Swing and a miss.

I just did this a few days ago, came out to $0.15 :(

Lady at the MTO desk "You really paid $1 for this motorcycle?" ... "Yep, needs a few repairs." ... "15 cents plz" woot :)

Rounded up to the nearest nickel. You should have used your debit card, and saved 2 cents.......lol

Pay with a good old fashioned paper cheque :lmao:
put int he memo it cost you $50 to collect $0.15 cents

If you really got the patients and want to make a good point write 15 cheque's for 1 cent each...lol

They can't tell you no.

It all balances out in the end for the MTO I guess... you have guys like griffin and Gary who are paranoid about getting caught for tax evasion so they pay in full, then the rest of us smart ones who actually like keeping a dollar in our pocket can save when we buy used.

Thanks guys!

Seriously! I thought paying taxes 50% of the purchased price is good; I feel bad now.

You can also say you just bought the frame for x amount of dollars or pennies or whateverthefawq....
either way, make sure both you and the seller know the price you'll put down at the MTO.
better, have a signed contract that you bought it for x amount of dollars, DONE!

I thought about it. If you don't like taxation in a country with the 4th highest standard of living in the world, move to the US, which doesn't even crack the top 50.
I'll take the cheap education and health care, thanks.

This has to be reasonable. But, if you pay by bank draft a good amount, and pay by cash the rest, declare the bank draft amount and get a signed receipt from the seller. No one can dispute this.

Pardon my ignorance but I'm against over paying for tax. Someone who buys a brand new vehicle is already paying lots of $ on Tax when he closes the deal.

Why should the second owner pay for the very same tax?

Why not a fixed transfer tax??

You can even create your own Bill of Sale, and state if there are imperfections on the bike etc. Have both you and the seller sign the bill of sale and provide it as additional proof to the UVIP. There's no way for them to prove otherwise.

Yo - smart one!!
I only posted from a link to show what could happen, because someone (op) was not clear on the "possibilities" of tax evasion.
Not paranoid of any ****ing thing (over crowded elevators exempt), but thanks for dropping my name.

Brain washing at it's finest.
I'm retired son. I can come and go as I please.
Most of your tax money goes towards the outrageous salary of excessive govt workers.
There's a deficit everywhere you look.
Think about it!!
