taxes due on used bike

QFT (and I love that gif)

Also CafeRay, do you REALLY believe that the MTO office drones give a $h!t?

Yes, they insisted I gave an appraisal for the bike to pay the proper amount of tax. I said no and stuck with my declared value.

The MTO clerk asked you to go and get an appraisal for a simple ownership transfer? Nooooooo, can't believe you. It doesn't work that way.

Were you buying a bike or doing something else?

Also, look at what someone at the MTO prices:

"This package, which the seller must show to potential buyers, has a description of the motorcycle, its registration and lien history in Ontario, and the average wholesale and retail values for its model and year. It also includes information about retail sales tax. The seller gives the UVIP to the buyer."

Go find me wholesale and retail value books for motorcycles....go ahead...i'm waiting...thats right, there are none. The value portion is left blank, just like on older cars.

The worst that will happen is you and the seller will receive a letter in the mail asking to confirm the amount the vehicle was sold for. Toss it in the trash as it was not registered mail and there is no proof you ever received it. I've gotten that letter twice, once when buying and once when selling...."what letters?"

What about the insurance company when you file a claim on a stolen bike that you paid taxes on for $1 at the MTO?

Claims on stolen bikes are paid on market value. The insurance company does not go to the Ministry of Finance or Revenue Canada to find out how much tax you paid.

This is exactly what I did

So what happens if a seller makes me a receipt for double the value of the bike? would the insurance pay double the price because it says so on my receipt? Think about it

Aren't the pedals going forward?

Holy ****, just figured out why you crash so much. You're sitting on the bike backwards......
This would be me racing an unicycle

First you have to convince yourself that it's not stealing.

Paying taxes on an item that taxes have already been paid multiple times, like flipping my plate on the 407 is a moral dilemma I definitely can live with

Bingo.

Hey, you know that every single time you sell an item on kijiji or whatever, you are supposed to report that as income so you can be taxed on it.

Who here does that? Yea thats what i thought, so STFU.

Lots of people talking in this thread.

Go private and work out the price with the seller, when you go to the MTO, you won't get hassled for it. Nobody I know that has done this has been hassled for it. There is no book value for bikes so don't sweat it.
