Tank bag vs. Backpack for commuting to work

Hands down the best accessory I have bought for my motorcycle has been my Ogio Tailbag. Anything is better than a backpack for commuting! I don't like the idea of the inevitable scratches that will come to my tank from using a tank-bag, so maybe I would consider a tank-bag that uses the gas-tank-ring attach method.

+1. Tailbags are best and don't get in your way.

I went to Snow City in Scarborough yesterday and picked up the OXFORD 1ST TIME TANK 'N' TAILER
(http://www.hein-gericke.co.uk/oxford-1st-time-tank-n-tailer-blk-ol425-black.html). It's a dual purpose bag - it's a magnetic tank bag as well as a tail bag (includes bungees and velcro). I tried it out this morning and it was totally OK to ride with on my Ninja 250, didn't get in the way. At 18L it's big enough to hold what I need for a day of work.

Thanks for all the feedback!

I prefer a tailbag myself. I had a Joe Rocket two-piece tank bag, but I didn't like how it got in my way on my old Ninja 250 (small bike I guess). I now use this tail bag on my GSX650F:

it looks good and has enough room to fit a pair of shoes, wallet and cellphone. it can even be expanded but the design is a little silly; the expansion zipper is on the bottom part, so you have to undo the straps to expand it.

Backpack works for me, have always ridden with one.

Still use it even when i have Givi sidecases and topcase on the bike.

How do you guys who say a tankbag gets in your way sit on the bike? I have a generic tankbag that expands hugely and it has never gotten in my way. Do you lay on the tank or do you have midget arms?

When riding, my tankbag feels like it's right in front of my face even when it's only 2/3 full. Can't get into much of a tuck with it.
So tankbag for travel and tail for commuting. I use a backpack bungeed to the pillion seat for day to day commute.

It all depends on the bike and seating position...sport/touring no problem, something not upright and it can get annoying depending on how big it is or what's in it. I have clip ons on a Ninja 250 and the pegs are 1" up 2" back, mod like that can make a big difference especially when in tuck.
You could also get lucky and find a proper fitting one that's perfect for you...

+1, and on every bike I've had.

On 2 SS bikes I've had, they somehow do not let the wind escape & it pushes my body backwards. I have to try really hard to push forward to compensate. This is around 140 km/h

I have that tailbag and love it too -- it's on the bike 99.9% of the time either loaded or carrying water, cell, extra layer, clear visor, etc. I'm also looking at a ring-lock tank bag for when I upgrade bikes, as sadly the CBR250R has a removable vs flip-up gas cap (so no bolted ring to attach to).

I also have a backpack (Alpinestars Tech Aero) and it's ok, but I only really use it when I need to carry more than what the tailbag can hold (eg. commuting out some place for the weekend).

So it seems to interfere with your bikes aerodynamics. I haven't had this issue with the bikes I've had luckily.

Thanks for the info.

Can't get into much of a tuck with it.
So tankbag for travel and tail for commuting.

Just a question, how much of a tuck do you get into when you are just commuting?

I hate tank bags. Too much clutter in front of me. I just use a backpack and if I don't feel like wearing it I just strap it to the tail with a few Rokstraps. Easy.

Fewer options for tank bags for me now, anyway, since the RS has a plastic tank.

Also, the one I tried on my 650R was blowing all over the place without even putting anything in it. The magnets were crap. If it weren't for the safety straps that go around the triple, I would've lost it the first day.

For lots of cargo I have a massive Alpine bag from MEC. Can carry over 70 lbs for hours and be fine. Bike starts handling similar to having a passenger at that kind of weight, though.

I wear a backpack daily and it doesn't bug me. That said, I would prefer a tail bag. As for a tank bag not getting in the way, try commuting on a Daytona 675.

Neither - This is the best thing I have ever bought and it has a strap to be carried like a back pack

Goes on top of the passenger seat so you don't have the annoyance of something bulky in your tank

The brand is Axio and this is what it looks like on the bike

I have put in my Gerbie jacket, a sweater and a pair of gloves and a bunch of cables and miscellaneous stuff inside

And it comes with a net in case inside is full and you need extra space

Never discredit a cargo net, easy to carry & you can put 2-3 items bundled to the passenger seat. Can hold large items like a helmet.
