tank bag that converts to backpacks

It was either Royal or GP that had a few tank bags that convert to backpacks, not sure which store (they are right beside eachother if you're making the trek to Whitby :)).

I didn't want a really large tank bag, so I got the Icon Primer at Royal, it works, haven't used it many miles yet.

Key points about tank bag converts:

1) Make sure the underside / side to your back is an anti scratch material...even nylon can cause microstracthes! I once strapped a pizza down to my tank and the damn carboard caused micro scratches!!!!

2) Beware of the strength of the magnets if you intend to haul around your laptop! Magnets can wipe your hardrive!!!! I once wiped the firmware of my dvd player with a novelty desk magnet.

I've got an iWire magnetic tank bag I picked up from GP at the start of the season. It's a small bag and converts to a backpack with two straps. No padding on the straps, just straight webbing. I haven't really used it as a backpack yet so can't speak to it's comfort but it's a small bag so unless you're carrying gold bricks inside it's probably fine. I'm actually thinking of selling it since my current bike has a plastic tank fairing.

Bags connection makes one that works with their fuel cap ring system which means the bag doesn't touch your paintwork. Pricey but really nice bit of kit, I have the city tankbag but might also spring for the daypack one.

What about the magnets inside the hard drive? Won't they wipe you hard drive clean? :bounce:

You hard disk is a magnetic disk. Certain small magnets are enough to pick up subtle field stregnth differences for the purposes of reading and writing on a disk. There are also shielded components for the purpose of blocking certain levels of field strengths.

But if you put a strong enough magnetic field near your hard drive or even shielded components you will cause damage. Tank bank mangets are strong, and often the flaps that contain the magnet (at least in the case of the tank bag I have) fold away to a central location in the middle of the bag, combining 4 mangets together!!! I wouldn't dare put a laptop near those magnets!

A dinky little magnet used to close an ipad case or bb phone case wont do damage, but tank bak magnets are far stronger.

You wouldn't believe how powerful the magnet is, inside your hard drive! :) Love taking them out and hanging them under the bike to save my back tire from nails and to trigger the street lights to change :) WOOT :D
