Tank bag = scratched tank?

I have a tank bag on mine, and yes it has scratched it a bit over time. :(
I also have a tailbag. Maybe that would be a better choice for you if you're worried about scratching.

Yep. The magnets can get a hold of tiny pieces of metal, or a small stone will get wedged in there and if you don't take the tank bag off straight up, then there's a good chance you'll get a scratch.
I have 4 or 5 from me taking my tank bag off the wrong way and having a tiny object stuck in between, but I personally don't care too much. Others might.

Putting ANYTHING against your paint is going to scratch it to some degree. Even assuming a perfectly clean gas tank and tank bag, which is never going to happen but anyways, as the tank bag shifts around slightly from the bike movements it will do minor damage to the paint. Add on dust, rain, all the other junk in the air into the mix, and that tank bag is going to leave some history on the tank. Best option is 3M film like tank slapper, or just live with the consequences and try to keep things as clean as possible

I use one of those small black rubber mats that you get from the Dollar Store intended for lining toolbox drawers. It's perforated for ventilation and cushions slightly. Also grips tank bag slightly and stops bag moving around too much which is what causes scratches. Magnets still attach to tank no problem.
