Supersport to Dual Sport

I'm in the process of switching from an FZ1 to a dualsport, but in my case I am just going to get Continental Trail Attack II tires installed on the FZ1. Then I should be able to rip up the dirt roads around here better than the Pilot Road II's I currently have. :-)

As somebody who has the Continental Trail Attack II's ..... They are not exactly dual sport tires. I'm talking 95% road, 5% gravel, dirt.

I am just hoping they are better than the Pilot Road II's. The pilot roads were great on all kinds of crap.... as long as you were going straight and kept the centre compound on the ground. Once leaned, the bike would slide around quite a bit. But the bike itself was great for the interesting gravel around here.

Riding road bikes on gravel is always fun. On gravel, often being like marbles on hard surface, I'm not convinced an 80/20 tire will give much more traction than 95/5 tire. Maybe a little bit. Like you said leaning gets pretty hairy. Well, you didn't day that, but that's the drift I got. Anyway, my biggest concern with gravel roading is the unexpected sharp edged potholes against tubeless mag wheels. To deal with that I have mounted 130/70-17 BT-45 rear tire to the front. It's much meatier. I think there are a couple radial options as well.

When I was looking for a new set of tires, I asked around a bit. I am not going to be going crazy fast, these roads/goat paths aren't made for that. But I described my riding like this..... I spend most of my kms on pavement but spend about half my time on dirt. :-)

I'll accept that as an answer until you come up with something better:p

You're talking on loose surfaces, right?

Yup. The original Pilot Roads were great on gravel and dirt. But once they went with the dual compounds.... not so much. I have gotten use to hanging off the bike to try to keep it upright on the dirt in a turn. If I leaned, I got the old Pilot Power rubber contacting the road and they are ***** on anything loose. My favorite roads around here are gravel and dirt and twisty. I couldn't really enjoy the twisty part. We shall have to see how the new rubber performs. :)

Have a 2000 ZRX 1100 for awhile now and bought a 2014 KTM 690R in May '14. Love it....most fun bike I've ever had. The ZRX has been sitting since. Bought SM wheels and now have two bikes in one. I've ridden it to B.C. and back. I have 30" inseam and manage fine.

^MK?

Jeez i'm having Deja Vu here. Hey Matt, it's Chase (I had the FZ-09).... Sold that and had a 2014 KTM 690 for a year. The 690 is really a phenomenal bike... but $17,689.30 / $17,124 without helmet!?!?!? That's almost what I paid for my 2015 KTM 1190 Adventure.... Maybe I'm missing something here.

* You can decrease the turning radius on the 690 by screwing in the steering stops.
* The seat concepts seat is definitely an upgrade... was needed for my fat ***.
* Wings exhaust is amazing.

I got a 4 year extended warranty (5 years total), etc. Also got some other small goodies. The warranty is like 1600-1800, but whatever. Piece of mind ya know.

BTW I remember you man, seen that you got a 690 a while back (you made a post), so I checked them out and fell in love with it. Took me a while to find something to replace the R6 as the every day bike. I seen the adjustable steering stops, I "fixed" it the night I got it. It's still a boat though lol. I actually dont mind the stock seat too much (getting used to the 2x4 lol), I couldn't see myself replacing it. I'm going with the Akro exhaust. KTM warranty only allows that lol. I can literally do anything to the bike, except to keep warranty I need the Akro. Power mods must be "KTM approved", anything else is OK. Thank goodness for not needing any power mods because she's a beast!

I mean, this bike is 12 o'clock power wheelies kind of fun. It's an absolute blast, I love it.

17+K ?? What? Ouch!!! Should have been 15K all in at the worst if my math is right? The MSRP is well under 13. Are the 16's more expensive?

**Note - it would help if I had a bill, so I could break it down to the "T", but I'm in the midst of moving and my entire life is packed in boxes currently***

12,500-13,000 (can't remember) + tax + 650 PDI/Freight + 4 years extra warranty which is like 1600-1800 + 550 helmet + other goodies (can't remember cost off the top of my head). Unfortunately it all adds up. That's the cost of getting a new bike, but I'll be keeping it a fairly long time. I will have at least 5 years on this bike before I go get another one (30 my rates will go down on an SS, so then I can have both without insurance being totally unreasonable). Will eventually invest in the SM kit as well.

Yea the price definitely jumps up quickly when you add extended warranty, and a few tidbits here and there.

That's strange about the exhaust being the stickler part for the extended warranty. I had a Wings Exhaust on my 690 and GP didn't care about that.

Maybe the extended warranty is different than the stock warranty.... Not sure.

I'm not sure how you are surviving on the stock seat. My fat ass definitely couldn't survive.... Heheh

All they said to me was get them Akro to keep warranty. Could be an extended warranty thing.

I've only gotten like 400ish km on it. I'm sure later on my tune will change about the seat. It is a dirt bike though, I've never sat on a comfortable dirtbike lol. So I see you have the Adventure now! Congrats dude! We gotta get together sometime for a ride.
