Street racing. Up 42% this long weekend compared to last year.

So if a bunch of accidents are being caused at low speeds vs high speeds, why the hell is the government focusing on giving people with high speed tickets? I thought the idea was to minimize accidents and fatalities
Because they aren't out to improve safety. They're out to make money. If it were about safety the cops would make themselves visible which would make people slow down and improve safety. Hiding behind stuff with a laser/radar gun does nothing for safety but makes them lots of money.

I recall reading a few articles about people in the US that got out of tickets from cops that were hiding because they argued that cops are supposed to improve safety and if they are not making themselves seen, they aren't slowing traffic and therefore are doing nothing for safety. They were from a couple years ago though.

I'm not sure it's that simple, but I don't disagree that there are better ways to improve safety. Rob and others point our some of the ways, driver education and skills improvement being probably the number 1, less speed differential being another. Speed limits are also enforced for residents too..people don't like cars doing 100kmh down their residential street. The problem with speed is it makes it more difficult to extricate yourself from a bad situation that you or someone else puts you in, and it exponentially increases the crash damage as speed increases.

Personally I think the economic pain of insurance far outweighs any ticket deterrent.

Agreed. The cost of tickets and points don't mean squat to me. They could double the ticket cost and I'd be a happy camper if it meant insurance wouldn't rise.

I think it's pretty common for drivers/riders to view Police as "out to catch them at every turn" rather than "enforce safe driving."

I was driving down creditview and lo and behold an e-biker was hogging the right lane during rush hour. I changed lanes and as I was about to pass the "bike" a bmw comes out from the other side of the street and tries to turn into my lane without looking, so of course I gun it to get past him and away from the biker. Course this is around a bend and a cop pulls me over for doing 21 over. WHY!!!!??? Charge the BMW for careless turn, failure to check blind spot, or the e-biker who was in the middle of the lane and then started riding on the sidewalk after I got pulled over. (btw those e-bikes are totally unpredictable!)

Now I aim to stay below 30 over. In their hunt, they don't want to miss a chance to get a 50 over, by pulling someone over for doing less than 30.

U are a marvelous cop psychic!

This. x1000000000

I have a buddy that did "the right thing" and stopped during the weekend for a cop. The cop didn't have radar on but charged him for 55 over, took his bike and license, then made him walk. There's more to the story in terms of what the cop said he'd do (rather than what he did) but this shows you what happens when you stop for the law because you feel that you should be responsible enough to do so.

Fill in the blanks for yourself.

....Are you serious? =/

Were they handing out weed to the cops for officers who caught people over 50?!

I really am, and I'm guessing it was money & promotions rather than weed, but who am i to say no?

I too must be another cop psychic. My cruising speed has gone up 10-15kph since the stunting/racing laws came into effect. I really seems the police are after the big one.

I know riders who were on highway seven to Ottawa and passed two OPP doing 4O over.. I guess they didn't have radar on ;)
