Sputters in the Morning

Just reciently my bike has begun sputtering in the morning. It happens when I first start riding and for less then a km. But it can sure be jerky for a min. I had spark plugs changes at the beginning of the summer and only have put 350 miles on since. It doesn't do it later in the day. Only morning. Any ideas on why?

Make? Model? Year? General condition of the bike? Some basic info would allow us to help you. Some bikes have FI, others still use carbs. Reasons for sputtering would be different. Some models have known issues.

Does your handle "Rebelrider1" indicate the bike your ride? A Honda 250 Rebel? Year?

Yes I have a honda rebel 250. It's 2009 and it has only 690 miles on it. It's carb and the condition is great! I love riding it and just got my saddlebags in 30 min ago. Going to put those on this weekend. When I first got it I had a problem with the choke, but I brought it in for general maintence. Choke got fixed up, oil change, lube and all. All else was good - just in the last week and a half ---- sputter sputter..... only in the morning though.

Cold start perhaps not letting it warm up enough??

It's carbed, let the damn bike warm up with the choke on a bit so it's sitting at the regular (or just above regular) idle RPM. Wait a few mins, close the choke, ride off into the sunset (well, sunrise in your case)

maybe it needs it's

Someone on this forum advised me to ride with choke for about 5 minutes, and I have been doing it since. No problem what so ever. I have a 250 ninja, I guess they do that. Just don't ride with full choke.

Initially it seems to be a simple problem of cold starts which is quite common in harsh environments and temperature drops due to which the engine takes time to be running at its optimum, or secondly it might be due to the fuel you are using it might be contaminated or there might be rust or dust particles that might be getting stuck in the fuel path. Better get a complete fuel drain and get high grade fuel the next time you go for it, and secondly get it serviced to getting the fuel tanks and lines cleaned.

Don't ride around with your choke on full/all the time. If you need the choke on to ride the bike, it might be running a bit lean. Possibly consider re-jetting the carbs.

and the ninja250 run very lean. Rebel250 not sure. You are only averaging 200km a year. It might be that the carbs have gotten a bit dirty from fuel sitting in them. Everyone around here seems to swear by seafoam so you could try a can of that before doing an actual overhaul/cleaning.

So - I think it may be that I wasn't letting it warm up enough. Friday morning I waiting a bit more. Didn't sputter much. I'll keep trying that out. I do put the premium gas in and the tank is spotless. Thanks for all the ideas on it and hopefully it's just - I need to be more patient before riding off!

If the manufacturer suggests, 87 octane, use 87 octane. 91, 92, 94 could be causing the sputtering. Just because gas is more expensive, doesn't mean its better for all aplications. unless the engine has a high compression ratio that can take advantage of a higher octane, the engine won't idle right, your gass mileage will go out the window and you will loose power.
