took it to a friend's mechanic for a tune up, and look over....

bikes been making a crazy squeaking noise, figured it could be the shock, swingarm bushings.....

buddy gets the bike apart, and sees this -

swingarm bushings seem fine, getting the shock looked at, however the picture below presents a few new problems

How bad is a hole like that in the swingarm? Structural integrity compromised, imminent death?

The can - Salvagable? Fixable with a good carbon guy? Can anyone recommend where to get a replacement that won't destroy my budget? I really don't plan on keeping this bike for more than a few more years... if I'm looking at a brand new can and a new swingarm.... I might be reconsidering my options

If this were my bike, and I planned to keep it only for a couple of years, I'd fix the hole in the swingarm with JBweld and try to fix the exhaust can with it too.

You can get a swingarm for probably $50, don't hack this.

Can I ask how you didn't notice this for a log enough time for it to rub right through?

Swingarms for those bikes (06-07 gsxr 600/750 is same) can be found easy enough often for under $100. Grab a decent used slipon and you're set.

picture it with the can on... every thing was hidden

there's been no additional noise, no performance loss

the bike has been in shops before for unrelated work, and no one saw/mentioned it

That's wild! I would at minimum replace the swingarm. I'd be much less concerned about the can but would still replace if it's in the budget as well.

As long as the the damage to the swingarm is just that wear hole, and it isn't cracked; while I am not a mechanical engineer, I don't think that the structural integrity of the swingarm is compromised in any significant way. Just my opinion based on what I see in the picture. The patching the hole is not meant to strengthen the swingarm, but simply to exclude water.

Looks like a shorty Akrapovič exhaust, yeah?

its a full size can, but hmmmm that would be a good solution, if I could find someone that could salvage whats left of the can to make a shorty, probably would be the cheapest solution...

I can't find any used Akrapovic cans, even the cheapest slip-on is still $500....

Just my $0.02 but how much is your life worth to you? If that swing arm was suppose to have a hole in it, it would have one before the rubbing.
On a side note, what was loose enough to cause it? Replacing it won't do any good till you identify the root problem.

went down in gravel a few seasons ago on that side, so i assume it bent the pipe enough to place it right up against the swingarm like that... all that is really required (once I solve the can issue) would be a few spacers to keep the pipe off of the arm

as far as your first comment... lots of things of all manner aren't meant to have scratches, dings, holes, play, etc..... doesn't necessarily mean they're junk or compromised. The last thing I'm worried about is my swingarm giving out due to what's shown in that picture.... however, given that they are so cheap on Ebay, I will probably end up grabbing one at some point.

does anyone have a guy that works with carbon fibre? muffler repair shop? someone who is skilled at making shorty cans? is Johnny636 still on these boards? I vaguely remember him doing this kinda thing

Are you seriously that cheap?? These swingarms are abundant and cheap and your advise is terrible.

OP I can clearly picture what your talking about and that's something that should have been caught much earlier.

Oh really, no noise you say...

They make components as light and thin as structurally possible...if the engineers would have approved it, it would have been built that way. There is actually 2 holes...the top one just hasn't lost the thin skin yet. NOT GOOD AS BOTH ARE ON A RIB. Your bike, your call ;)

not the noise you would associate with a hole in your exhaust.... every one i had look at the bike, every one I described the sound to... not one suggested "hey maybe your pipe is rubbing a hole right through your swing arm".... it was all - swingarm bushings, shock....

this includes the guys and the owner at Z1.... not rookies or backyard mechanics

however, Z never saw the bike, but many, many people did.... It was not as obvious as you're making it out to be, but hey it's the Internet so I understand by posting a picture like this and telling my story I'm opening myself up to this kinda feedback.. whatever floats your boat, bro, guess I should have taken the bike to you... Gladly will pay you for your time and expertise

now, if anyone has some CONSTRUCTIVE advice about how to go about the exhaust can issue - that would be super

ie- a carbon fiber guy that can chop that full size can into a shorty, perform a patch, etc

I can't just get any old slipon can as I'm pretty sure that will NOT fit my akra full system midpipe without serious fabrication and customizing

I'm not completely opposed to replacing the slipon with a brand new akra can since I'm keeping the bike, I just would like to know if anyone had any other suggestions to salvage what's currently there.

I've already decided the swingarm is getting replaced since for 50 bucks it's a no brainer
