Snow tire - size matters?

Steel is better because it's tougher than alloy and cheaper to replace if it does get damaged.
I run steels in the winter because I am cheap (and I try hard not to bang wheels off things). Based on what I know now, a properly designed set of alloys is "tougher" as they don't bend if you bang them while drifting. It doesn't take much for steels to get a serious wobble.

Decent overview here of wheel types for winter hooning. For daily cruising, meh, run whatever.

Key words are properly designed...many of the alloys in winter tire packages offered are cheap China made that aren't up to oem spec. I've seen those crack with a hard hit.

I can see a high quality oem or aftermarket wheel being up to the task, I'm weary though after irreparably denting an oem alloy in the winter, cost about $700 to replace. The steel wheels i put on the next winter were $110 each.
