Considering the safe nature of the chase, does being banned from driving for life seem a little harsh?

LIFETIME BAN The man who pleaded guilty to leading police on a marathon truck chase around southern Ontario has been given a lifetime driving ban.

A man who pleaded guilty to leading police on a marathon truck chase around southern Ontario has been given a lifetime driving ban.
Jason Meadus, 40, entered the plea Tuesday during a court appearance in Milton, Ont.
Police say Meadus was driving a stolen flatbed truck on Oct. 31 when he led police on a meandering drive along some of the region's busiest highways, nearly all of which was captured by TV cameras.

Thats pretty harsh.

Our court system is ridiculous and getting carried away.

Harsh..yes.Deserved..probably.

what exactly is "lifetime ban"...cuz "life in prison" is what, 20 years in canada...so is it forever or just a couple of decades???

It's not a "Hey all he did was cause a safe 5hr chase and nothing else".

Read the full article:
Jason Meadus, 40, received a lifetime driving ban, two years in jail and three years of probation. He was convicted of failing to stop for police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, driving while disqualified and two counts of theft, according to a spokesperson at the Milton courthouse.

He was already a Disqualified Driver so there's obviously some serious driving history on his record there. That all factors in on the driving ban for life.

And since they know he is prepared to drive while disqualified, a lifetime ban does very little except create press that shows how tough the system is on criminals.

hehehe...exactly...i wonder if that brampton kid that killed the dad last week will get a "lifetime" ban?

Complete sustained disregard for the law in a 40,000 lb vehicle, yeah i'm fine with a lifetime ban.

so the answer is to... not give a lifetime ban?

Thats like saying laws are useless because criminals will break them anyway.

It means until you're dead - unlike "life sentences" for murder etc.
A (recently deceased) friend of mine couldn't stop drinking. He had so many DUI's it was time for a jail sentence of some type. He opted to surrender his drivers license for "LIFE" rather than do time.
He was not allowed to operate a riding lawnmower, or any other motorized vehicle for the rest of his life.
He still did borrow a car here and there - Georgetown police knew him well, and often they would follow / escort him home (to Glen Williams) to make sure he didn't kill anyone along the way.
Doesn't matter now, the booze ate his guts out and killed him.

I don't care much about the marathon police chase. I'm ok with him getting a lifetime ban simply for stealing the truck. People who steal cars, trucks, and motorcycles, should be banned from holding a license.

I hate thieves.

Cause and effect, if he didn't steal the truck he would not have been banned for life. So I say its fair.
