Similar but cheaper camera like GoPro?

The GoPro Hero 2 Motorsports edition is being cleared out for $199 at BestBuy:

Also comes with the wifi bacpac and remote.

Good luck getting the WiFi BacPac to work properly. I got a similar deal instead of getting the Hero 3 and I regret it ever since. You have to upgrade the software to use the WiFi stuff and one of three things can happen, it can work fine, it can work but have issues with time left and stopping when it wants to, or it will brick and you have to get a new one from GoPro (if it's still under warranty).

I just tried to redo my update the other day. It now tells me I have 1h37mins left on an empty 32 gb card. The remote shuts itself off when I stop the recording. That's just using it n the house to test it, but at least it didn't shut itself off every 10 or less minutes like last time.

I'm considering selling mine and just getting the Hero 3 white.

Hmm... hopefully that's an isolated incident. I'll let you know how mine performs after I receive it and do all the updates. Thanks for the heads up!

Haha, not isolated in the least. Google it and you will find many people.

I bricked my first two GoPro's, after they replaced them they told me not to update the firmware anymore! lol.

Update was to fix the battery read out to account for the battery bacpac, oh well :(

I just bought the JVC adixxion, no housing was on sale at future shop Saturday night, also took advantage of the gopro deal for 199$. testing the JVC now, it works underwater and is small(no housing) about half the size of an iphone and 2.5 times as wide. has its own color screen built in, can shoot live video to ustream, and load directly to social media sites and youtube. can use your smartphone as a remote too. The software is tough to figure out and the wifi is sketchy. I haven't opened the gopro yet, but gopro is the Cadillac of this segment for those of you who are wondering what's best. All the major tv shows use gopros- just watch amazing race on Sunday nights. I'm going to compare them both and see what is best for me- possibly return one. One good thing about the go pro is that the video editing software is free for it. For $129 though the polaroid is best! I have also done a lot of research and the gopro2 is supposedly better than the 3's(except black version). In the end there will be a new version of these out in 5 months for Christmas!

Read my previous posts in this thread. The polaroid @129.99 is a SCAM (sort of). It's NOT the xs100, it is the xs80... the camera and packaging looks identical. There are no reviews posted anywhere for this "xs80"

Also, Canadian tire made it explicitly clear that if I opened it, there are no returns.

Buyer beware!

should have bought it from amazon

So would we consider the GoPro Hero 2 Motorsport Edition on sale at Best Buy for $199 a good deal or is Contour Roam a better choice?

From the reviews that I've read the Contour 2 Roam (same as what Canadian Tire is selling). Is comparable to the GO PRO 2 or GO PR3 (white and Silver models). But the price at Canadian Tire is better. The Hero 3 Black has the picture out of all of them , but is anverage $200 more.

I was able to return mine without a single issue. I opened it ( but did not destroy packaging in process ) so either they never noticed or just didn't care either way got my money back !!

I am now a little turned off this whole 'action cam" thing. Think I'll just stick to my Iphone and digi cam for now..

I hear you... Although, I bought the GP2 being currently offered through Best Buy. I don't need the latest and greatest, and I think that one is quite good for the value (200).

I had all manner of problems with the wifi bacpac until I updated to the latest firmware on both the bacpac and camera. now it works just like it should with my phone. I don't use the remote much.

update: JVC cam worked great, took great pics was tiny compared to other cams, but the software and Wi-Fi would not work with my computer running the latest version of windows- even their viewing software would not work. too bad because I really liked the camera- so I returned it and went with gopro2. what a difference in experience, easy to use, it updated no problem and did not brick.(after the update you must remove the battery for 10 sec, reinstall battery and turn back on, it then completes the updates) the picture and sound quality is great, and I got 8 mounts in my box, only 3 in the JVC and the sticky;s on the JVC did not stick. If JVC comes out with an updated version I will definitely be in for that!

I bought the Sony hdr-as10 it now has a firmware update that does 60/s frames at 1080p with sound. Also does 60 & 120 frames at 720p.

Whops, I musta missed that part :(

Comparing the GoPro Hero2 to the brand new Drift HD Ghost I'll say that the Hero2 wins hands down for picture quality (during the day). The colours are soooo much better, detail is sharper, just looks better all around. I may have to try the Hero2 in the skeleton case, see if the audio is any good. The audio with the Drift and external mic is mind blowing :)

Here2 for the front, Drift for the rear. Audio from the drift, external wind cut mic:

Can you tell me what editing software you used to get both rear and forward images to show up in one screen? Good clarity from both cameras.
Thanks.

I was looking at this cam as well, but it is big compared to the others. I was thinking of getting a regular flash camcorder and mounting it(mounts available on amazon and ebay) really I don't ride in the rain

When I initially updated the firmware for my Hero2, Wifi BacPac and Remote, I was having TONS of problems. Camera would freeze after a few seconds, remote could not connect to the BacPac, etc. What a piece of crap, you'd think paying $200 you'd get something that would work out of the box.

I managed to manually update the firmware on the Hero2 (not via CineForm) and so far it seems to have fixed this issue... time will tell I guess.
