Similar but cheaper camera like GoPro?

I'd say this qualifies for as good. I've had both. I like the size a lot better with contour. The go pro is big and clunky. Not to mention that when it's on a helmet the rider looks like the great gazoo.

I have the contour ...willing to sell for 100$ if your interested. Used it for snowboarding videos (only used it on two trips boarding last year).

The Polaroid is just poor... I think I am going to stick with the go pro.... cant beat the video quality of it, contour is by far the closest from everything posted here, but still lacking the sharpness.

Please compare with Hero 3 Black, and not the White version. If you are buying go pro white version, then yes the alternative would be the Polaroid.

The hero 3 black is a $400 camera. If you're going to compare at the same price point there are a lot better than the cheap go pro. At the black price, the roam2 by contour compares and doesn't need a waterproof case but comes with one. It's also half the size and the same price as the gopro and available in various colors for those who would care. I've never found an issue with sharpness after having owned both and the majority of use for me was mountain bike racing/riding.

Ego is half the price of the gopro and its smaller too.
 
The GoPro hero white is $249 at Best Buy and the GoPro hero black is $349. I don't want to spend $349 for the GoPro hero black unless it's on sale for a crazy discount. So what's the best camera that I can get for $200ish as I'm hearing that the white isn't the best option.

Strong statements on the Polaroid. Are you talking from first hand experience, or just trying to pass opinion ?

Experience on youtube watching Polaroid official video and other user's videos, all in 1080p. came up with this unbiased statement.

Go watch the Hero 3 black either official or from other users, you will have the same opinion, the result is quite obvious.

My god, the Hero black is $449, you had me shocked for a second, I had to look on bestbuy to verify.

if it is $349 i will go buy it right now!
 
Found a very good video of comparison between the Contour Roam 2 vs Hero 3 Black

The contour is pretty balanced, the details is sharp but not smooth, better in low light condition but poor in over exposure conditions

Hero 3 black, only good in day time, best bright day light, details are sharp and smooth, good for film making, very poor in low light.

my opinion
Consumer - contour $299
Professional - Hero 3 black $399

BTW, i've watched like 10 videos of the Hero 2, it is actually pretty good also, similar with the contour roam 2 if not better (smoother details)

i might just go with hero 2 if i can find one

You started this thread looking for a cheaper alternative to GoPro?
GoPro is currently the best no matter how you slice it. (in terms of picture quality)


For 1/3rd the price, the Polaroid and Contour is are a GOOD second choice.

Check this article out. To be honest I think they all compare so closely it comes down to personal preference. Youtube some videos, check out the manufacturer websites for their videos and go from there. I love the contour 80% because of it's size and shape and it's so simple to turn on.

Yep, alternative meaning similar/same quality at a lower price

Please look at Hero 3 Black, no where close to the Polaroid, it is just a cheaper camera

and by starting the thread, i saw the real alternative - contour roam 2, which is the closest to go pro hero 3

i got what I wanted and very informative comments have been shared by everyone on here.
