Shoulder Pain - Who can help?

After my accident last year (it was all bruises and I had no broken bones) but now I can't ride without left shoulder pain :(

Do you first go to
a) A bike mechanic and ask them to check the bike ergonomics? I.e I screwed up rebuilding the front end after the accident???
b) Family doctor to get a referral to someone like a chiropractor??

??????

Advise me experienced bikers..

I would think you should get your shoulder evaluated.

Maybe a few rounds of physio will get you onto the path of better health, maybe it requires surgery. Maybe a completely new riding position is the answer?

You pay for the healthcare already, might as well start there.

Go see a doctor, if he says its ok to, start exercising.
When I broke my collar bone, I got a sling, went to see the ortho specialist who told me to throw it away, the initial discomfort and the occasional pain was worth it, kept my range of motion

He also gave me some basic exercises to do(without the weights) as I healed I started using weights

A little exercise and weight training will not only help with recovery, but being in shape actually improves your riding stamina as well

Since it is only one shoulder, I would be leaning towards a problem with you, not your bike.

Dr Spina (aka Dr Dre) fixed my shoulder up when it was facked. Great guy, knows his stuff, gets results.

Not being a smartass when I say I just ride my trials bike more, that really is what I do. My knee already has full range of motion after I trashed it on the rocks in January, I don't think I could have seen any better results then that from a bone cruncher.

... you don't need a referral for a chiropractor, just money.

Good luck with that, I've never had an MRI even when I thought I needed one, ymmv.
You also need to remember that there is a huge difference between a test and a therapy.

yeah OP, may have to sell the MRI a bit
wouldn't say anything about soreness on the bike

tell your Doc some other stuff like can't brush your teeth
or unable to pick up your daughter/grandkid/niece
having difficulty performing your job
gobbling ibuprofen everyday

I finally got an MRI after many years. Meh. Showed there was nothing that could be done surgically. Any improvements need to be in flexibility and muscle training. Between that and being careful with my shoulder in certain parts of the motion, that's all I can do.

Before each ride, have someone give you a good swift kick in the nuts.
You'll forget all about the shoulder.
I used that on my brother before when he was complaining about leg pain. A solid punch in the arm solved his leg issues. He was unimpressed by my ability to help him solve his problems.

Yep, likely the same as him, pain is an electro-chemical nerve response and that won't show on any test. That's why the doctor has to ask you your pain level, they can't tell just by looking. ... with a kick in the nuts being a 9.8 out of 10

I agree with this. Go to a SPORTS physio, they are the best.

My shoulders have taken a beating over the years - first I gave up hockey, then golf -- I was terrified my riding days were done too. The guy I used is in Stouffville, Peter Kennedy, Physiotherapy Clinic | Kennedy Physiotherapy | Ontario. After years of enduring shoulder pain and restricting activities he gave me some ultrasound treatment and a series of low impact rubber band exercises. After 3 visits over 4 weeks the pain disappeared and have been pain free for 2 years now.

Not sure where you live, but when I had shoulder issues I'd have ridden to Pickle Lake using 1 arm to get the treatment I got from Kennedy.

I always hate the out of 10 scale. Until you had everything go wrong, each person has their own baseline. I called the crash that dislocated my shoulder a four in the ambulance because I figured it could be a lot worse. Putting it back in after it was out for 10 days and I was unmedicated. Agh. That was more than a four. I have a slight tear but my shoulder will be perpetually vulnerable because it was out for so long.

The handlebar under my rib cage and into the left kidney was my worst so far, that one really hurt,
still recovering from that one.

... oh and by the way they didn't even give me an MRI for that I had everything but.

Did your insurance company not arrange a round of medical to get you recovered from your injuries?

Was it worse then this or not as bad because this one really didn't hurt much :|
No video of my crash. Probably not that interesting. Basically I got cut off, then they crashed right it front of me, I tried to ride over their bike but was unsuccessful and went out over the handlebars. When it became apparent that I was going to land directly on my head I put my arm out to save my brain and drove my arm out the back.
