Should I go through insurance?

So my wife borrowed my dad's truck today to run some errands (go to the dump etc.) since she had the day off. Along the way she managed to drag the side of the brand new truck along the corner of a brick building. It's more then a few scratches. Probably $6-7000.

Question #1: Is it worth going through my insurance for this. I'm not sure what to expect from them for an increased premium as I've never had an accident.

Question #2: If we do go through insurance do I have to report it? The building was a private residence.

Insurance will require a police report. If its your first at fault accident you should be okay. If its going to cost 6-7000 I definatly recommend going thru insurance if u dont have the disposable cash. Cops may consider it a hit and run if the building owner reported it. I recommend saying it was a different building.

I don't reco ever going through insurance unless you HAVE TO. 6-7k is a lot of money but if/when you try to switch insurance in the next 5-10 years, they will ask you point blank "do you have any prior accidents in the last 10 years" -> claims will show up also and it's a no brainer you will not be able to get the lowest rate. Also that assumes that you don't get any speeding tickets or accidents in that time.

Insurance does not require a police report. I wouldn't go thru insurance unless you don't have the money to fix it. You'll be paying for it (insurance wise) for a long time...

So I'm the only one wondering how much damage was done to the private residence?

Can we see a pic of the truck damage?

She says the damage to the building wasn't significant, just some scrapes. The place was in pretty rough shape to start with so I don't think they'll notice.

It turns out that while I was at work she called to see how much our insurance would go up by. They informed her that It would go through my parents insurance like someone here mentioned. They said that they now have it on record and it would be illegal if we didn't make a claim, blah blah blah, our insurance is going to go up when we renew it next February.

Since we don't want to make a claim and they don't know what vehicle it happened to and there is no record of it happening, how can they put up our insurance based on a phone call from someone saying that they damaged a vehicle and they think it will be allot. For all they know, my wife doesn't know what she's talking about and it can be buffed out.

Aren't most of the calls now recorded for "Integrity and training purposes"? That may be something to think about. And hope there were no cameras for the building owner to review.

brilliant lol

Seems now you're stuck in a pretty sticky situation.

Originally i would have said just pay for the damage out of pocket, now that she called insurance if they're gonna raise the rates anyways you might as well make the claim.

This can get really ugly and they can even cancel your insurance if you start to have conflicting stories. Good luck trying to get insurance after that.

Also for anyone ever thinking about calling insurance for such questions, always ask "Hypothetically what would happen if..." lol Don't just straight out tell them what happened and then expect them to forget it the minute you hang up the phone.

I would shop around get a few quotes from dealers and small body shops and go from there. I do think this would all be through your dads ins company not yours. Since your wife was the driver of his truck she is covered under his insurance. I wouldn't worry what your insurance company said...its got nothing to do with them unless your wife was given a ticket and convicted.

My car was backed into while living in toronto. Woke up saw the damage called state farm got it fixed. No police report was asked for. Damage was 2800$ for crushed passenger door, paint and labour. had to pay my deductible, 500$. Rates never changed.

Comprehensive claim

2 completely different scenarios.

If you claim Your wife will have an at fault accident and your dad will have an at fault claim.
And if your wife is on your insurance that will go up as well.

Got to love how one accident can affect 3 peoples insurance rates.
