They're pretty much necessary for the 06+ 600/750's, I don't think the geometry was an issue in the older models?

If I would reflect what the biggest lesson I learned this past racing season was, I would have to say (at a racing beginner level): Instead of buying a basic stock bike and add parts to it, just buy something already well sorted and concentrate all your efforts in 2 areas 1) suspension 2) parts that will make riding more comfortable (i.e. 1/6 turn throttle, quickshifter) not to make you faster necessarily but to make it easier for you to ride so you can concentrate on learning the skill.
...And goes without saying, seat time...with a purpose not just to go around a track but this thread is about parts
