Hi,
My friend is looking to get a scooter. She is thinking on a Vespa 150cc 2007 used. What other options are out there? like quality and reliability. I am personally not too sure on her decision and would like other options/alternatives.

Notice I said scooter so stick with that please
Thanks

There is a thread here on the maxi category - but for city scoots like she is looking at - you'd be better to contact the local forum

She is looking a full M licence required for that as well as insurance. Staying under 100cc might make more sense from a dollar stand point.

Burgmans are supposed to be good. They come in 400 or 650 engine sizes. They are bit more expensive and bigger than 150cc but will give you freind more options for long distance riding. The 650 is hella fast.

What are your freinds plans for it?

Any word on Diamond Auto? I'm just worried her buying a lemon ...

The ZX-RR of course ;)

IMO any scooter from Honda will be as tough as nails. The new PCX150 looks 'cool' too.

The other option to Vespa/Piaggio or Aprilia is to buy Japanese. I had a Piaggio MP3 250cc and it was pretty good, with some minor quirks. Now I have a Yamaha and construction, fit and finish seem to be better. But the Piaggio had the advantage of a very nice transmission, it was so smooth (Vespa and Piaggio are the same thing).

I'd go at least 250cc, scooters are generally tuned to go slow, so 125cc will be SLOW.
Vespa - Piaggio prices are $$$$. Well, anything 250cc and bigger is more expensive, sometimes way more expensive

BWS 125 is a good option, very light and easily tunable. You can kit it out to 236cc and it will be an absolute BEAST.

150 vespa doesn't even compute, such a rip off on price, tell her just get a cbr125 or shut up about it.

She is set in a scooter, I am asking for scooter options to help her make a good buy... was my decision I would have done a regular bike... that's why I said keep it on scooters ...

That's why I say to tell her to shut up about. She's wasting your time getting you to pick a fashion accessory. Next she'll be complaining you don't ride with her and her scooter. Let her dig her own pit. Friend to a friend, don't get involved with this. She wants a scooter just cuz... children!

Checking her insurance cost is where to start - not a "good buy"
New rider and over 125 cc - figure a couple of thousand or more.
Lots of new riders make the mistake of getting a bike all lined up before checking for insurance costs which are often higher than the bike value.

For a new rider 50-80 cc will still be $850 or so for the first year.
So a "good buy" is what she can afford to insure.

If she is just looking for a city commuter I recommend the bws 50. I had one last summer and loved it. I was able to get insurance for 150 a year. 23 gm2. It's gets over 100 km on a 5 dollar tank, lots of in seat storage and your not going to break the bank picking one up. Brings a tear to my eye reminiscing about it but everyone's gotta move up.

Thanks everyone, ill bring up some names ... i dunno why just vespa is just not ringing my side of things.. n she is a stubborn one ...

I started on scooters and I have no regrets. I prefer a motorcycle now but the scooter had its place. My Vespa 150 was perfect for city commuting, and I never had a problem keeping up with traffic. Took it regularly on the Allen, and up to Lake Simcoe on the 80 k roads. The parking was awesome, and it was actually better in the rain when you're tucked in behind the shield than the motorcycle is. And when traffic is really bad, you can pretend you're on an E-bike ;P

My insurance was less than 600 bucks as a new rider, and I bought it from Craigslist for a decent price. Easy to maintain, and Troy at Fada Scooters in Kensington took care of anything I needed.

So say what you want about 'em, they have their place. The scooter forums are great, and you'd bet better answers there, I'm sure. But I wouldn't try to talk her out of it - people like what they like.

Was your vespa reliably? I'm just worried on the reliability side... I don't mind it being a scooter

Reliability is not the problem. They have been doing the same thing over and over for 67 years. By now they know what they are doing.

You should look up the scooter I had, Piaggio MP3 250cc. So many things that could go wrong with that thing, from the alignment of the two front wheels, the locking mechanism for the suspension, the sensors, etc. etc. etc. I rode it like a motorcycle (meaning pretty hard for a scooter), nothing ever went wrong. Would I buy it again? For sure, but the one with the 500cc engine. My mistake was getting the 250cc, pretty heavy scooter for that engine, it spent all its life with me at WOT.

Guess I'm just hesitant on her decision... I'll let her get it n stop worrying...

we had a yamaha vino 125, it was great, well priced and insured cheap.

we previously had a vespa, reliability was also good, insurance was a bit pricey since with steel body shell, even tipping over is expensive to repair.

What seven and Marco said + 1000

Get a vespa 150. Incredibly versatile and perfect for city driving. Safe, reliable and beautifully designed for its purpose. Worth every penny new or used.

The Vespa was originally designed after WWII to put Italy back on its feet with reliable, utiliarian transportation. It was designed to accommodate women, wearing dresses ( hence the frame) and to allow the transport of goods. You woul be amazed at how much you can transport on a Vespa. Motorcycles not so much.

I ride both
