Scarborough: Land of the Crap Drivers, partial proof

Country folk are so much more relaxed and the inbreeding stories are usually wildly embellished. Nothing wrong with driving exam up North. Whatever it takes to win.

If my experience as a brazilian living here for about 1 year serves something, I would said that no matter if your are chinese, indian, canadian... more 70% of people using roads here don't freaking know what they are doing. I am not saying that Brazil is an example of proper driving ( it's not; the amount of people killed in the roads and street in Brazil is bigger than any civil war in any country annualy), but I survived driving safely.
The simple concept of not using the cellphone while driving, or what is a passing lane, or... whatever, still not make sense in most drivers mind.
The only thing I may agree in this discussion in the proper knowledge of English for the majority of immigrant drivers...

forget about the roads

hang out at a large parking lot, that's another level of stupid....and that with them going slooooweeeerrrrrr

these problems can be easily solved with targeted tickets (steep fines)

...
-Chinese people lack spacial awareness: I debunk this one because there are a lot of competent Chinese drivers. Find a driver that has a HK driver's license for proof. Unfortunately there are whole lot more incompetent/blissfully ignorant ones...

Seriously, where did this ever come from?

After living in China for a couple of years and seeing how they drive and park, the thought did occur to me. Also living in Scarborough for over a decade, seeing driving and parking on roads and in malls, I did wonder if this could be an inherited deficit. However several trips to HK showed me that if the HK drivers can do it, and not crash/rip pieces of vehicle off on a regular basis, park straight in their designated spots, then the rest of the Chinese population should have the same ability. Maybe my observations in China and Scarborough are attributed to driving inexperience, blissful ignorance, or don't care attitude.

I've been to Brasil. And driven there quite a bit, from the north to the south.
The drivers there are more aggressive, don't obey the rules of the road all that often.
But they definitely know how to handle their vehicles with more skill.
They actually accelerate to merge. No hogging of the left lane. Parallel parking is an art
I much prefer driving in Brasil.

We use to self regulate meaning if you did something stupid and did not do the sorry wave then people honked at you.
The longer the honk, the other drivers know that person is a real moron and didn't do the sorry wave.
Once you see the sorry wave, things were cool again because the person realized they made a mistake.

BUT now, honk or flash your headlights = ROAD RAGEEEEEEEEEEEEeee

So the morons carry on and get worse.

You are right at some points... however, after seeing people dead in the streets in a everyday day basis you start to question the their's inteligence. But you are right... left lane are respected, parallel parking is a survival need... things you can not see quite a lot here...

Well if you take it as percentages of world population....wonder who the worst drivers are?

After the "Calgary's Worst Driver" video from last winter when a clueless idiot takes 4 minutes to get out of a parking spot (and it wasn't even a full parking lot!), one might wonder if they're right here amongst us.....but honestly, having traveled extensively across both the USA and Canada as well as various other places in the world, they're everywhere. It's just that big cities are a magnet for them.

And if you've never watched that video...do it. The 30 second commercial at the beginning is annoying, but trust me, the video is worth it. Don't facepalm yourself too hard.

I forgot about the truck drivers. They stay in the 2 right lanes, magic.
The road carnage might be the same here if we were all driving small little cars with minimal crash standards.
Our bad drivers are bubble wrapped in multiple air-bags.

In Brampton they do the pre-wave. Which means I'm about to cut you off, you better slam your brakes.
Which I think is worse, they know they are doing something stupid and are just going to right ahead an do it anyway. This is worse than the oblivious driver IMO, because they are aware and choose otherwise.

I've never believed in the licensing in this country. I once had a girlfriend who had no business driving on the road what so ever who got her license by crying. I totally lost all faith in the system that day all those years ago.

I don't care how crrap these Chinese guys drive so long as they're delivering very cheap but quality goods. What's a little collateral damage if I can buy a wallet for 25cents?

I had heard that in China the idea when driving is that everyone else has to watch out for you - not you being sure it is safe to proceed. So if you want to pull out then you just do it and oncoming traffic would be prepared for it.

The rule of size. The bigger the vehicle the more right of way it has. Not sure how true it is, but I wouldn't walk out in front of a truck. Right of way doesn't matter if you're dead. Not like here, where pedestrians walk in the dark in black.....

There are bad chinese drivers out there, but there are also bad drivers of every other race out there. Does anyone have statistics or other proof one is worse than the other?

Like I said before, I live in Scarborough and it does not seem worse than Toronto, Vaughan or Brampton.
