Safety Inspection US Bike

Hey fellas,
Hopefully, someone can help me out? I was planning on looking at a bike tomorrow and it is a US bike. The odometer in in miles. The bike is already registered in Ontario with a valid ownership I have no experience with US bikes and I want to know if there will be issues with the safety inspection because it is a US bike.

If it's already got an Ontario ownership the cross border inspection has already been done so there's really nothing to worry about - the inspection will be the same as any other bike in the end.

No problem. It should have one of these stickers somewhere on it indicating that it's been properly imported and put through the RIV process which "officially" converts it to a Canadian vehicle eligible for registration (in your case, an Ontario ownership) in this country.

If the inspecting mechanic takes any issue with anything related to it being an original USA bike (and the speedo would likely be the only thing that would give it away) point out the sticker and tell him it was imported, inspected, and found to be in compliance. Chances are he'll move along without any more questions.

RIV Sticker? Not necessarily. It depends on how old the bike was at time of import.

Mine has no such sticker as I did not receive one when I imported the bike from the US 6 or 7 years ago. That bike was more than 15 years old at time of import so it did not require a RIV inspection at import time.

However, my truck which I also imported just 3 years ago, and was only one year old at the time, did require a RIV inspection and it was issued a RIV import sticker.

For a basic safety standards certificate inspection, it makes no difference as to the bike's country of origin. The speedo makes no difference for that inspection.

Actually the country of origin for all of them is the same, Japan for example. The difference is the models. For most it won't make a difference, but there are some US models of vehicles you can't import as they don't have an equivalent one here and you would have to go thru Federal safety requirements. But that's a whole different kettle of fish.

Even for those vehicles, you CAN import them into Canada once they reach 15 years of age.

Agreed, but under 15 years old it should have a sticker. I've imported a few things from the USA and after the RIV process have ALWAYS got a sticker. It arrives in the mail a week or three after the RIV inspection is completed.

If you look at the picture of the one I posted you'll see it's actually for a bike.
