Rookie Mistake

Thanks everyone for the words of encouragement. The bike is finally home. Put in 120k on it tonight getting it home and a quick spin around the area. I had so much fun and felt very comfortable on it. No stalls!

Now time to do some research on cleaning it up a little and basic maintenance!

Do yourself a real favor and get the shop manual for the bike if you can. You might find one on eBay. If you can't get the Yamaha shop manual, settle for a Clymer. Modern bikes are relatively trouble free, but you really need to know about maintenance (drive shaft oil changes, gear case oil, engine oil, brake fluid and pad changes etc.) You can save a bundle and have fewer problems by knowing your bike.

Found it online for free. Definitely want to learn as much as I can over the next 2 years of going through my license. My plan is to use this entry bike to learn both riding and maintenance on, then get a bigger bike when I get my full M. The bike I bought, should hold its retail value fairly well I think.

Canadian Tire and Partsource carry Seafoam. The can has recommended "dosage" (I think it's about 1 oz per gallon of gas). When I had a carbed bike, I used it about once a month, so that was 3 or 4 tanks.

Where can you buy seafoam? and how often do you use it?

Seafoam is kerosene. You only use it if you have a dirty carburetor. Yours has just been cleaned so it won't do you any good. I don't recommend it unless your bike has a dirty carb. You won't have that problem if you follow the storage requirements for your bike (fuel stabilizer, close the fuel petcock and empty the carb bowls in the fall when you store the bike, it's not difficult).

I would first start with your idle screw.. Maybe turn it up a little.

If that does not fix It maybe that your idle jet is clogged? What I found is Seafoam Works good if you dump a half bottle atleast in when there is very little gas in the tank. The bike will actually stall from it after running for a bit.. And then I leave it over night so it stays in the carb and then the next day I fill up the gas and start the bike (will take a few tries)

There is lots of knowledgeable guys on the forum that are helping me out with some issues too, so don't worry you will figure it out

Thanks FattBoy.

It was actually fixed by Joe at West End Cycle and he did a great job of getting it back running. Cleaned the carb and put in new spark plugs. Along with the new battery the previous owner put in when I bought it, I should be good for a bit . Have been out riding a few times now and already have started to feel more comfortable. M2 course this weekend and I should be able to add to my skill set there. Have been really enjoying the rides so far and love the feeling of being out there.

Thanks again for all the input everyone...continues to help me grow
