Rock The Gear

Wow, her "Squid" post really makes the point. People will do what they will, but it hits home when you read about her experiences.

original incident is nicely documented...good refresher to those that care...

What happens when you wear jeans and have an off

63 degree day, out riding with a buddy (last ride of the year) rode to the gas station, ate some food, decided to haul *** up an exit ramp in burns harbor indiana (most will pass it on their way to grattan from illinois) bike made it through the first two turns just fine, last corner (middle of 4th gear) the tire let go because i was an idiot and didn't let tires warm up & riding that fast on the street didn't help either, bike slid up the ramp across all 3 lanes of 80/94E, i slid up the ramp then face hit the green reflector pole and ripped my face shield off, then slid left foot first into a grass embankment & it catapulted me onto 80/94E, i was nearly hit by a PT cruiser (but it had great brakes and JUST missed me) I slid across all three lanes, and landed in between the rumble strip & the concrete wall. 10 months of crutches, a gimped leg for the rest of my life & a tough lesson learned... Moral of the story? don't be a dumbass

Yeah. After a few weeks I was able to function again. The rash on the knee was the worst, that had to stay covered for quite a long time, and scared a bit. For reference I would estimate that was less then 50km/h, Denim tore open the second it hit the ground. The rest of me was covered in quality gear, not a scratch!

Thanks for pointing that out, lots of us wear everything else to protect us execpt protective pants. Myself included the first few years of riding. I now have kavalar jeans, two pairs of textile pants and leathers. Yea it gets hot some times but so worth it looking at your pictures.

I saw this happen last year to a good friend. Some parts of the jean disappeared instantly.

...I'm pretty much AGATT after seeing that. I guess all the videos online didn't hit me quite as hard as seeing it irl.

I got lucky when I went down. One little tear in regular jeans and I was going well past 50. After seeing things like that and being through it once I won't risk it again.

Did you slide onto grass out of curiosity? Have a friend who had his bike flip on him while sliding through grass...he was fine lol

My gf slid across wet asphalt in tights without any damage. I still don't understand how she did that considering I had a bloody knee from my tiny pine cone slip; you're either all lucky or I'm just very unlucky.

Gear is overrated, nothing beats the feeling of squidding it around town in the middle of summer.

Nope. I had the luck to slide down the oncoming lane for many hundreds of feet. I just knew enough to get on my back as fast as possible. I was good until I realized that's here I was and out my hand down to get up. Seeing the yellow line on your right shoulder while sliding makes you panic. Even if you know not to put your hands down it's still your natural reaction.

Also an important lesson not to hop on the back of anyone's bike. Make sure they are competent with a passenger. 120 mph with someone else's life in your hands may not be a solid idea.
