Ring Around The Erie + mini Ride Report

Yikes, I didn't realize the August long weekend was coming up so fast!
I think I will be doing this (first big ferry ride):

which will get me some views of the rolling hills like this

and, of course, a top case full of cherry coke and bourbon to take home

OK so here's the thing - I thought I'd be getting on to the big ferry to cross Lake Erie - but -
I guess they just have a lot more people going from Leamington to Pelee Island than they
do going all the way to Sandusky - so I was on the baby ferry - fits about 12 cars total and
the deck is metal seating, and nary a mermaid in sight. But, here's a view coming into Pelee Island

We passed right by Cedar Point, and there were lots of coasters running as we went by.
Of course, I caught none of them in this picture. Sigh.

So what's next? Better roads to come - Ohio so far has been rolling hills, but not
so many corners. I was a little late so I didn't get riding pics. Traffic was sparse
and gas was cheap (only $14USD to fill'er up)

Grabbed a $6 6 pack of Rolling Rock, which I thought was made in Pennsylvania, but
I have now learned is just another Anheuser-Busch brand and brewed in NJ. Egads.

Sunday should be nice and hot. Or hot and nice. We'll see.

What a difference a day makes. Almost immediately into the twisties, and barely any traffic.
Headed out of New Philadelphia, OH and towards the lake here. I took Hwy 39/212/542 and
this is Lake Atwood:

I continued along OH 39 (which I recommend) and eventually you get into the Ohio River
valley, where I found this very cool (and old - 106 years OLD) metal truss suspension
bridge. It only cost $1 to cross both ways (into West Virginia) so I did.

I continued along the Ohio River and you could tell this was once an industrial
powerhouse area, but now a lot is abandoned and run down. The only thing that
looked in prime shape was the big nuclear reactor. This was in the Beaver
Valley, near the town of Beaver, south of Beaver Falls, on the Beaver River,
close to New Beaver, home to Penn State at Beaver. Yes, there's nothing like
being on a tour and hitting a lot of Beaver.

But enough of that, every so often you would hit a nice bridge with a nice little
river, like this one:

And last but not least, another recommended road here - which for some reason
wasn't very busy on a Sunday. I don't get it.

My little 3-day excursion has come to an end, starting out in Bath NY where I headed up
along the shores of Lake Keuka (a finger lake) where I found a monument for Glenn Curtiss,
a pioneer in naval aviation. His company, Curtiss-Wright, manufactured all sorts
of cool aircraft back in the day, like the P40 Tomahawk. If you look out on the lake, there's
a little seaplane.

After riding up the lakes, I ended up at the top of Lake Seneca in Geneva. There I took this
crap picture. It was so bright I couldn't see the LCD on the little camera, so quite a few
ended up having crappy exposure, but hopefully you get the idea.

After shopping at a gigantic outlet mall in Waterloo NY, it was starting to get pretty hot
out - so I headed north to the south shores of Lake Ontario, hoping to get some cool
breezes. Found this army Heli on the way, and thought it was neat.

My plan worked and there was a nice cool breeze off the lake, and I followed it most
of the way to Niagara Falls. This looks like any coastline in Ontario, but it's actually
Sodus Point in NY.

Nice trip - wish I'd gone. ..oh well another one to add to the to do list. Spent a couple of days north of HWY 9 finding some back roads.

I suspect American's are not Sunday tour around in the car drivers anymore due to ( for them ) sky high gas prices and a really bad economy.
It was the same in PA - very few vehicles on the twisties - tho the small towns often had events going on.
