riding out the dealer

Does the dealership only need insurance in the case of a finance? What if i buy the bike outright cash money, do they still need insurance to transfer ownership? What if i dont want to insure it until spring time and tow it home? What if im buying it as a track bike?

Haha, you really asked the questions i wanted to ask but couldn't word it myself :P

Almost every relevant entry on the MTO website indicates insurance is required to "register" a vehicle. I did find a line on this page: http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/vehicle/used.shtml that indicates insurance is not required if the vehicle is not being plated: "Present proof of insurance (if you are going to put plates on the vehicle)".

So, it looks like ownership can be transferred without insurance, but I don't know what this means for follow-up registration or vehicle branding.

Either way, I don't think I'd want my new toy sitting around for months without any insurance whatsoever. Theft, house fire, bike falls over onto kids friend, etc.

Most dealers won't even let you (can't let you) ride out without an insurance/plate - maybe its different if its a used dealership??

If they do release the bike to you and you want to get it home, just do yourself a favor and get CAA plus now. $89/year (or something like that) for 3 tows..

CAA won't tow away from a dealer. It's for breakdown not delivery. Also the bike would likely have to be plated.

My guess is the ownership will need to be "unfit" which just means if the bike is put on the road in the future it will need to have a safety done. Not really branded since once it is safetied, insured and plated it will be changed to "fit". Branding implies it never changes (like in the case of a write-off).

The insurance company may give you grief when that time comes thinking that you were riding the bike without plates/insurance. I know a couple of people that had a really hard time getting insurance after the bike sat uninsured for over a year, for this reason.

Well I got my bike towed using CAA a week and a half ago with no plates/insurance to get it to the new owner xD. "weak battery + dangerous snowy/icy road conditions" - but both statements were true - day of a snow storm.
