riding in right lane

when there is a row of cars parked on the right lane, but there is room (lots of room) for a motorcycle. Can we ride there?

the left lane is packed with cars.

(for example, north bound bathurst near bloor)

I do it on St. Clair all the time, passed a few cops, never said nothin.

Use caution because some of the cars take issue to it and will jut into the space to block you.

It is fully legal but as tafb said some people do not like it. Though if you hit someone's car door do to them not looking, it is their fault.

I agree it's legal but wouldn't it be the motorcyclists fault if we took off their door even though it's the stupidity of the car driver? Because even though it's legal we still have to exercise caution.

Yeah - I do it all the time on eglinton and yonge streets. I never had a problem but as mentioned it is pretty dangerous not only for doors but people don't expect someone to be there so they tend to step out in front of cars/vans without looking. So it helpful to be extra mindful and cover the brakes.

It's illegal for a person to open their car door without first checking to make sure there is no danger approaching. If you search in the HTA it's there.

Doesn't really matter if its legal if you're dead though. Just don't be blasting down that lane at like 80+ in heavy traffic :P

I do this on Bloor and St. Clair. Do it relatively slowly so you'll have time to react. Never had someone open a door on me but countless times people would not see me and merge into the right lane once they pass the parked cars.

Most people don't seem to care that you do it. There are occasional nutters that would take issue with anything, of course.

Do it on Yonge ST in Aurora all the time, I putter along in first covering the brake. I've had a few try to block me in but I just go on my way but very cautiously.

I always do this on St.Clair, it saves a TON of time especially around rush hour.

I only do it when traffic is stopped though, which is frequent with all the lights, that way there's a very low risk of anything happening. I've had doors open, cars don't really block me cause they're always bumper to bumper. I've had people take issue and honk/yell but luckily never been blocked in yet. Just go in 1st gear and you'll easily be able to react to anything.

All these riders on St. Clair I never see on the road! I do it on that road, as well. But often people are parked so badly and far out that I'm almost more lane splitting than riding in the right lane. Doesn't help that businesses leave cones on the street to block people from parking their loading zones right next to the line so you have to swerve back into the live lane to go around it.

Watch out for JP Towing trucks (the ones they use to clear St. Clair after 4pm if people haven't moved their cars). Those guys either don't realize how large their trucks are, don't care, or are actively trying to block the lane on me. They are always way over the line blocking me.

This is legal?! How or why is this different from splitting/filtering?

The cars you are passing are completely parked so it'snot cconsidered sharing a lane with another vehicle.

this has been discussed many times on this forum, not sure if search functionality works, but we have thread s on this in this forum and the laws/hta sub forum

As mentioned by others, it's legal. However one thing I have noticed more and more is motorcyclists using Bicycle lanes. As a bicyclist, this pisses me off.
