Riding Help

almost all of us only use 2 fingers to brake, downshifting or not down shifting

Wow, really? Using all fingers on the front brake is more than fine, if you know how to brake properly - i.e. light even pressure applied on the lever, etc. 'Fistful' lol.

So 2 fingers if I want to rev-match at the same time, otherwise use 2 or 4 depending on how much braking power I need? Just curious what's recommended so I can form good habits early.

Get used to two all the time, gives you better control over the throttle with the rest of your fingers. If you don't have blipping down pat, work on that first. Brake with your rear only, get the blipping smooth. Then work on blipping while two finger braking.

Wholy ****, now I am confused, I don't think I know how to brake anymore after all this advice

People please stop with all this blipping, rev matching ********, the kid doesn't even know when to start braking and you are talking about blipping? seriously

Dude, clutch in, 4 fingers on the brake lever softly until you stop. Practice that alone making sure you are stopping on the spot you wanted to stop. Remember to look where you want to go and don't look at the floor, or gauges or anything else.

Once you get that down then start worrying about using engine brake and only when you are doing all that by instinct you can start learning blipping

^^ Best advice you will get all day. K.I.S.S. - Keep It Simple, Stupid. Telling a brand new rider to use advanced technique is how you put a kid in the ditch.

this is some of the worst advice ive ever seen on this site.

Keep in mind I'm not the OP, I asked my question sort of as a piggyback because it's related.

I can drive a stick car and on my second ride out didn't have much trouble rev matching... some good info in this thread.

explorer/satellite/orbitor <--- its like a ghost town on the weekends
good tip. ill be there this weekend. i like riddng around that area by the golf course at centenial court. ya low speed limit but long twisty between eglington and burnumthorpe.

if i make it back this weekend ill be all over that area.

OP - flashing the brake lights a couple times here and there isnt a bad thing when you are downshifting.
bikes speed up and slow down much faster than cars with no brake tapping so they dont understand you slowing down like that sometimes.

renforth north to bloor is also a nice road to just cruise. as well as east mall back to eglinton. then go north and hit up woodbine :)

i tend to ride lakeshore from mississauga to oakville the most. i dont know why, but i just do, its just my go-to section of road for wen i want to waste 20-40 min of a day. theres a few good sections but no twistys.
ill be hitting up mississauga road more this year, also plan to take 27N right to barrie (love that road, but watch your speed), ive got a few guys i ride with up there.
hwy 93 is ok but again, its straight. horseshoe road from barrie to horseshoe resort is also nice some long banked curves. (those arent my quiet roads, i know lots of 80km/hr roads up there with no traffic lights at all, and for the most part they are better pavement than down here.)

Since you are in the area, if you have a spare hr and a bit, take this route

https://maps.google.ca/maps?saddr=o...q=snake+&t=h&mra=mi&mrsp=13&sz=13&via=10&z=13

Do it backwards starting in M and then L.

You can always come back through Lakeshore if you don't want to take the HWY

2 places to be careful, had a couple of friends crash trying to follow

Enter these coordinates on google maps
1- 43.432027,-79.861947 - this entire little road is fun but take it easy until you know it well
2- 43.320245,-79.893651 - this is turn 3 on snake road, this whole road is **** anyways, don't speed

Have fun
