Riding Down Under - Tropical Cairns Australia

Thanks I have similar 65 yr old that started riding only a few years ago. Runs a very cool motorcycle themed cafe in Herberton I've shown in this Down Under blog, it's about an hours ride away.
But she's tiny - no way she could get on a KLR650 - If I recall she had a BMW310 and complained that she just didn't have enough time to ride.....
Impressed coming so late in life to the sport.

Seems I'd been too long away from Herberton,

Missed a turned, ended up in Malanda, got turned around per usual there and ended up coming into Herberton from the opposite side after a rather exhilarating unintended ride with a few other riders heading the same way riding a tad faster ( the lead riders ) than I have been lately - ended up chasing those two while the rest strung out behind - there are lovely sweeps through the rain forest with some nice elevation changes - made me work in a good way tho almost overcooked a couple of times. So what started as a leisurely ride to lunch turned to a slightly spirited romp the back way adding perhaps 80 km to the route. ( took me a while to recreate it on the map ) Mix of riders from sports bikes to touring to adv and plain old dirt....no one really cooking it but the two leads pulling away with me sort of tagging on.....much fun and got the adrenalin up for the first time in a while. CB500F does okay and forgives my out of practice shifts.....brakes are lovely on it. Only concern is the chain which I talked to partner about.
Managed to forget my padded shorts so sore ass on return ..276km - the first 200 on stock seat .remainder with the AirHawk.
So after all that there was just about nothing open in Herberton however what was open was new to me and serving a sunday roast for $20.
Lots of crackling which I'm not fond of tho many are, apple sauce, squash, roast potatoes and generous roast pork with gravy.
Since my glutide is misbehaving I had no problem with the meal size tho skipped the carrots.

Good find for me. Herberton was once a thriving mining area in the late 1880s when the hotel first open but fell on hard times - tourism taking over which makes me think the places closed sunday are in error.
There were many bikes out.

New life for town’s grand old lady | The Express Newspaper | Local News covering Sport, Agricultural, Entertainment, Community & Business News for Mareeba, Atherton, Cooktown, Kuranda, the Tablelands & Far North Queensland Australia.
Missed a turn again getting back out so instead of heading over the mountain came part way back the way I came in...this time at a mellow pace - managed to find my way back down the Gillies at a VERY sedate pace as was stuffed and tired.
Was cooler than expected with just a spatter of rain - the route avoided any wind issues tho coming north after Gordonvale had a decent tailwind made listening to the audiobook far easier. Was surprised I was down to 1 bar tho in hindsight the spirited section was most responsible.
Got home 3.30 and satisfied with the longest ride in a while. Herberton and Ravenshoe are about as far as I can handle these days but have intermediate destinations in region as well.
Maybe try for Hasties Swamp later in the week before the birds all leave. Timed right I can catch Hasties early then lunch at the crepe place in Herberton which opens at 11 every day cept sunday.
Jacarandas were just starting to bloom so that will be a treat to look forward to.

Bed early, up at midnight for the pit stop and now I'm hungry...only a cheese toast for supper. Some soup I think will do.
No riding tomorrow...hot humid and rainy....

I think I may spring for pinlock as C3 visor detent is failing tho I wear riding glasses anyway. Prefer to have two working levels. Quite like these and not expensive. Saved my eye today when a leafy twig nailed me right in the face. It was windy even that the rain forest was shedding.
$7.83 for 3 pairs from Temu. The arms slide into tthe helmet smoothly and nose piece comfie.
Polycarbonate so tough tho not sure if milspec.

Resisting buying the ridiculously priced C3 main visor.....over $100 here if I can find.

Marc almost at the end of his EV adventure with a ZERO. 88,000 km but motor is shot and $$ to replace,,,cautionary for EV motorcycle wanna be tho the otherwise the bike has been pretty solid,
He was riding the Verge in Europe - better bike tho not without issues too.

Noraly loves her rough roads and got her fill this day. 40+ yr old Yamaha performing very well. Perhaps a lesson there.

Crashed before midnight.

Only could ensure a five with a fake word.

Missed the in person doctor appointment but managed a phone version which was fine. Got script for stronger version of Ozempic instead of the failing Trulicity (liraglutide).
Ozempic was what I lost most of the 60 lb on so happy to be back on it tho Trulicity was working fine at supper where 2 slices of small pizza satiated me ( partner ends with 4 cuz she doesn't eat much if anything ).
Bit concerned as stronger dose of Ozempic coming as supplies of low doses constrained.
I have 3 weeks of Trulicity left as a backup. 🍿
Really did not like having the "food noise", cravings and low blood sugar headaches back.....nor the extra 2 kg I gained.
Known issue that Trulicity effectiveness wanes.

Dentist in arvo. Grey cloudy windy and warm weather for the next while tho the forecasts differ with the BOM site calling for 31. Just now it's 23.5C feels like 26 at 3 am so suspect 31 could be correct. :( Better day tomorrow for spin to Skybury or Mossman. Could go to Kuranda today. Not sure about a ride...

Nice start to day.

Summer went away for a while - low 20s today and feels chilly at 6pm. Off to cultural infusion. Orchestral group with friends.

Chilly day but lovely concert with friends.

CPAC's proscenium arch theatre spans a full size stage and includes an orchestra pit able to accommodate an entire symphony orchestra. With 941 seats in the house, the theatre offers premium viewing regardless of whether you are seated in the stalls, balcony or balcony boxes. The auditorium is lined with locally sourced timbers to provide acoustic benefits while enriching the atmosphere.

The theatre also offers access to a crying room; a soundproof space where you can still experience the event via one-way glass and with live audio feed. Traditionally designed for people to take babies or young children to reduce disturbance to other patrons while still allowing the accompanying adult to watch the performance, the room is available for anyone to use who may benefit from taking a break from the main theatre space. The volume of the audio feed can be adjusted. The room has a small number of chairs, bean bags and other sensory aids. Ask an usher if you would like assistance to access this room.

With ample wheel chair seating and a hearing loop, the design included accessibility as a high priority. With advance notice CPAC can accommodate a range of individual needs and we encourage visitors to notify staff of any individual needs at the time of booking.

Decent sleep. Windy today so nothing extensive, was considering crossing the Daintree but coming home would be a slog in that breeze. Likely a lunch run tho going out to Bowls tonight. Tomorrow maybe looking better. Heading into the wind I have a hard time hearing the Audible book tho music is a fall back. I think there is another IEM solution with better noise suppression but still looking. I've gone back to the Schuberth C3 despite its flaky visor....it's easiest to ride with and lets me hydrate.

Vegging on a windy mellow day ...high 20s. Noraly absorbing culture.

Marc on his way out of Thailand...not much to see but sooooo many two wheel vehicles. Not very good economics on a ZERO EV bike given the motor failing at 70,000 km on a $40,000 ride. The big Burgman 650 had a similar horizon line with an expensive failure at 100,000 km fairly common but damn it was a reliable bike and much fun to tour on and play in the twists. I put 100,000 km between two of them - the 2009 Exec was a terrific bike for me and weather protection superb. 150 kph was about the top end speed but quick off the line and always in the correct gear. Much fun. 611 lb 🙄 but a four season bike for S Ontario.

Not doing well on picking even odds.
Enjoyable evening out with friends ....back to back.

My riding buddy and Mac technician finally got a bike I found for him....2016 Tiger 800 so he can head out on a long wander and vLog. $6500 ride away all the safety etc and he owns it now. 62k km with service records.
This Tiger comes loaded with WP suspension, factory cruise control, driving lights and a top box. Lower crash bars and skid plate have already been fitted for enhanced protection off road, as well as wide pegs fitted for all-day comfort and better control

Partner is back from house/dog sitting at step dottors. She still pretty ordinary :( but sez improving. √

Buddy scored Dainese high touring boots ( Gortex Blizzard) and Triumph gloves for $100 the set thanks to my tip and sez they fit perfect. Good deal.
1759156339129.png
It's been fun chasing deals for him. Scored his bike and the boots and gloves.

Decided the F700 not what he wanted and scored a 2016 Triumph Tiger XcX for $6500 all in with 60k km. One owner and service records. Less ugly photo, It;'s XcX which has upgrades.
Comes loaded with WP suspension, factory cruise control, driving lights and a top box. Lower crash bars and skid plate have already been fitted for enhanced protection off road, as well as wide pegs fitted for all-day comfort and better control. It's tough, reliable, and built to handle whatever the road throws at you. This bike is mechanically A1, the paint and bodywork are excellent and it is ready for your next adventure!

This is the one we missed with on 20k km but 2014 but not XcX - one he bought is 2016 XcX

Flying down Tuesday to pick up from Brisbane dealer. Only on the market for one day ...he missed a deal I found him locally with lower KM and full luggage and has been whinging about it since so learned his lesson.
New bike is now bought, paid for and he just has to hop on. We think the dealer was nervous of the "high mileage" 🙄 but took it on a favourable trade and wanted to move it. He under priced it.
Buddy scooped some else who was going to see it next day. So he will have a 1600 km shake down cruise to start from Brisbane.

Spent a little time editing this I as wanted a record and not sleepy yet.

Eagle flew out in the night🎶

I notice Noraly's spiritual predecessor book and decided to re-read it. Forgotten how hilariously eccentric her upbringing was.
1759260411855.png
n 1982, at the age of just twenty-three and halfway through her architecture studies, Elspeth Beard left her family and friends in London and set off on a 35,000-mile solo adventure around the world on her 1974 BMW R60 6. Reeling from a recent breakup and with only limited savings from her pub job, a tent, a few clothes and some tools, all packed on the back of her bike, she was determined to prove herself. She had ridden bikes since her teens and was well travelled. But nothing could prepare her for what lay ahead. When she returned to London nearly two and a half years later she was stones lighter and decades wiser. She’d ridden through unforgiving landscapes and countries ravaged by war, witnessed civil uprisings that forced her to fake documents, and fended off sexual attacks, biker gangs and corrupt police convinced she was trafficking drugs. She’d survived life-threatening illnesses, personal loss and brutal accidents that had left permanent scars and a black hole in her memory. And she’d fallen in love with two very different men. In an age before email, the internet, mobile phones, satnavs and, in some parts of the world, readily available and reliable maps, Elspeth achieved something that would still seem remarkable today. Told with honesty and wit, this is the extraordinary and moving story of a unique and life-changing adventure.

LOVED that book. The world he rode in is pretty much gone. His follow-up was also an excellent read, and not a melancholy trip down memory lane but an exploration of what's different now.

Thanks did not know about a second book. (y) These books all point out the immense changes between the 60s and now in technology, geo-politics and motorcycles.
If I had been told that I would do it again at the age of seventy I would have said that was ridiculous. Seventy would be much too old for that kind of thing.
Heh that was my feeling when I set out crossing Canada solo at 70 ...I better do this now !!!! Will be interesting to see his thoughts and journey.

Good segue for me... Marc solo in Malaysia with an EV motorcycle buying phone top ups ;)

Noraly on her retro Yamaha in dangerous places.

Off to lunch with riding buddy who lost his motorcycle license tho he got his his car license back and was happy with that ( medical issue that is now controlled. ) Hot day coming up again and it smells like something died under the house which in a Queenslander is NOT a good thing,

Had a good feed on spaghetti bolognese at Bowls Club - was hungry and glutide was not being effective - will be glad to switch back to Ozempic in a couple of weeks tho my weight stopped going up ....had very little to eat before supper but even after a big bowl of spaghetti had ice cream, tea and a mint slice while watching the Americans win WWII 🙄

Watching late night media and dottor finally surfaced.
was almost 2 years ago Kenz died and came across this photo from a trip to France. Think will get it framed....he also liked RED:love::love:

Cute kid ....certainly got that from his mum.

Got out for a short ride to have lunch with previous riding better ....his donation of his rather tired Burgman 650 which I sold for $1,000 helped, along with the sale of my equal tired 2004 KLR650 to fund the CB300F I rode for 40k km. Then through a series of flips ended with the current CB500F with no money out of pocket.
cb500f√√.png yeah I like red
Bike does all I need but soon will need new chain and sprocket.

2 slices of homemade lasagna courtesy stepdottor = early bedtime. Then woke at midnight.

This came up in the feed and wanted to see Sierra Leon now....visited for several weeks in the 70s....
Had compound up on that mountain - hard hot place to run.
1759505846701.png
You can get a glimpse of the beaches which are big enough that a 737 made an emergency landing safely on one ....BUT also was able to take off after they made a temporary wooden runway. More cost effective than abandoning the plane I guess....
When we were there there was no one on the beaches....just not done in the tropics yet you could not get sun burned ....the high dust from the Sahara screened the UV.
In the 70s there were certain nights where you could be killed if you stumbled into forbidden tribal coming of age ceremonies....you just stayed home.
Then driving 20 km out of the city was going back 4,000 years with hand built mud and wattle huts and useable cloth being woven in 8" strips. People that wanted to live outside the city had everything from the jungle - housing and food.
They only worked for modern toys

Midnight. My start line ( two correct letters ) had so many possible combinations for solution I looked up previous Wordle solutions. Don't consider that Ai but is it fair go, too much corner cutting or a valid strategy?
Had a decent nap til 11.30 pm, woke up needing to pee, then the dog went out as well so that worked out fine. Wordle worked the neurons this time.
Wide awake listening to folk music. 🎶
