Renting abroad: Rome or Florence?

Pardon my thinking out loud, for your valued opinions.
A f800gt is likely what I'm renting, for a bit more protection in case it rains over the f700/800's.

Base price of (euros)$150, +$0.22/km (for 2 days), 15% discount if paying in full with reservation before March 15
or $290 for unlimited km
Breakeven would be 636km's to justify unlimited km
That is only 320km a day

I will be riding outside of Florence, big loops off highways, stopping in small towns for big meals.
300km+ days are no problem for me, but that's typically with minimal stops.

I'm thinking of going for the unlimited km's, but realistically won't hit it.. that fat person life.
What would you do?
 
Good luck man I don't even drive when I'm in italy I would be way too scared to ride a bike there.

That being said ive spent some time in Rome and ive spent some time in florence and id rather ride in florence just because the traffic is a little less crazy than rome, even though rome is probably my favourite city.

I would stay out of the major cities altogether tho and just ride around the Tuscany countryside. Lots of twisty hills and beautiful scenery. Whatever keeps you out of the cities is good tho

Reading this thread with interest. My birthday is on the 10th of September, and the MotoGP race at Misano is on the 11th. I am planning to (hopefully) rent a nice BMW touring bike (k1600) in Milan or Florence, and do a big tour around Italy, and possibly even Swiss Alps, Austria, etc, for a couple weeks...culminating in the race (or starting with it, not sure yet). It appears to me that there are a number of places to rent, and having spent time in Rome, I would definitely stay away from driving/riding there :)

Yup, I have a few nice routes provided by the local tour/rental places.

As for the best pricing on BMW's, I'm renting from these guys. Quick and professional in their responses, more english-friendly, and their terms and contracts make me feel the most comfortable.

Silly timing, but I think their prices are going up as of today, from 2015--> 2016 pricing.
They also offer discounts if you pay for the rental up front in full/more than the regular 15% deposit.

Pricing otherwise seem to be pretty close otherwise for base rate + mileage. Pricing for unlimited mileage seems to have a bit more spread. Just pick one that is most convenient for pickup/dropoff.

Just wondering, why ship your gear?

I have a couple of the MEC totes http://www.mec.ca/product/5030-444/mec-skyway-airline-tote-unisex/ , and they're really useful for carrying stuff in bulk, big enough that I can stay within the desired 1 free checked-bag limit, plus one backpack and my helmet as carry-on. And they fold small.

On my last trip, I ended up using the tote repeatedly through the trip; instead of carrying 3-5 bags (side box bags, top box backpack, pillion seat bag, tank bag) off the bike every night, everything went in the tote and simplified the lugging action.
