Renting a motorcycle abroad

Anyone do this before? Any cautions?

I'd like to rent a motorcycle if I have time in St. Raphael in France. I would love to ride along the coast and take some pictures along the way.

Anything I should know prior to committing to this?

Not sure about Europe, but be careful you know all the costs and insurance required and read everything about your liability for theft and damage.
Also, make sure your travel health insurance doesn't have a motorcycle clause that excludes the policy.
Renting is expensive.

It is. But how often would I get to ride a motorcycle on the South of France? I'm just more concerned about the $1000 - $2000 (Euros) deposit they want for the bike?

We rented an R1200RT in Spain from IMT in 2012 http://www.imtbike.com/motorcycle-rentals/ and a Tiger Explorer from Adriatic Moto Tours as part of one of their organized tours in 2014 http://www.adriaticmototours.com/motorcycle-rental.

Both were great experiences and both companies had quality service. I put my foot down on gravel and did a no speed tip over with the RT. Put a couple scratches on the pannier and cylinder head guard, and I thought "*****, there goes my deposit". IMT was totally fair and only charged me 50 Euros. When they saw that I completely wore down a brand new rear tire and a half used front tire in 2000 kms, all they said was that it looked like we had a good time, and we're welcome to rent from them any time.

Had the rear differential start leaking on the Tiger. Adriatic carried a spare bike in the support van, which our leader took when he gave me his big GS. Both companies include roadside support, even if you're just renting.

Yeah, you've got to pay to play, but if you're only over for a couple weeks, its cheaper then shipping a bike over. Go for it!

I rented in the south of France ( Nice) many years ago, they all take a large security deposit as their deductibles are much higher. I think it was this company, cant believe they are still around.

Mid size only 120 euros, bring your own lid/gear. Best money you will ever spend. The prices are pretty much the same as well

I did the grand corniche ( 2 up with girlfreind) on a Yamaha DTM9oo and sorry, nothing in North America compares to riding in Europe.
