Registering a bike

Hey guys, tomorrow I am buying a motorcycle from someone, private sale. I will get the UVIP, and ownership from them, im getting the safety. The weather is starting to turn here in the GTA so im just going to wait until spring to insure it. My question is, can I register my vehicle without having insurance? I would not be getting plates, just switching over the ownership.

Thanks

No point in getting a safety if it's not getting the plate, you'll just have to get another safety done in the spring. If you register it without a safety it will be as "Unfit" which means that in the spring you won't be able to get a temp sticker and you will have to trailer it or ride dirty to get it inspected before you can get it all set up.

^ thats not true. Get your safety and emission out of the way and just insure and plate when youre ready to ride. Safety is only done once when transferring to another owner.

If he's not plating or insuring it then he isn't getting the sticker which you need the safety for,the safety is good for 30 days or so. Unless he can get the sticker without getting the plate?

**Correction the safety cert is good for 36 days.

The safety is valid for 36 days. Which means the ministry will not accept expired documents. Once youve gotten the safety cert you need to give it in within the 36 time frame.

You can give in your safety and emission without getting plates and stickers. They will only give you plates if you have insurance.

You will then get your ownership with a fit status on one side and the plate side will be blank.

Interesting, when I registered my girlfriends new bike last fall they made me do it as unfit since she was not putting a plate or insurance on it until the spring.

There is no emission testing for bikes though.

Just put the policy # from your car or something on there. They do not check for bikes, for cars they do. (personal experience)

This gets you the plate, just don't ride it until its insured.

Pardon me. There is no emissions testing for motorcycles.

Insurance is directly correlated with how much you can ride. In the riding months your premiums are high. During the winter your premiums are close to zero. Really, you are insuring Sept/Oct/mid Nov, or 2 months. You may not save anything in insurance by waiting for spring.

If you wait until spring, to be legal you'll need to haul your unfit bike to someone's shop who will cert your bike. You cannot legally ride an unfit bike to the shop. If you insure it now the bike is fit, you have 36 days to cert your bike, and you can legally ride it to wherever you need to repair and cert it. The savings in premium for 2 riding months today will be offset by the cost of having your bike hauled to a shop to do the cert in the spring.

If you wait for spring you will also not be covered by insurance for fire/theft during autumn and winter. This may not matter for an older bike, but might matter a lot for a stealable SS.
