Quick question about licencing an older bike...

I know if a car is over 20 years old, our fine friends at the MOT require an appraisal along with all the regular documents to switch over the ownership.

Does a motorcycle over 20 years of age require an appraisal now too?

The way I had it explained to me by someone that works at one of the "contract" Ontario Service Stores is there is no requirement for appraisals. The directive said something like "If the transfer looks suspicious... an appraisal is required".

So in an effort to keep their butts covered at all times, MTO is saying appraisals are required on everything.

I suppose I will find out soon enough but I guess I'm just wondering if anyone here has changed an ownership of a bike older than 20 years into their name recently and was an appraisal required...?

When I was plating my 1982 V45 Sabre, I was told it was needed by one office and not needed by another. Searching the internet turned up that it is not required for motorcycles.

+1. I just finished purchasing a 1987 BMW. I completed the Bill of Sale on the UVIP and the Service Ontario office accepted that as the value of the bike for taxation purposes. You weren't specific but, if you are transferring ownership through an inheritance, the regulations may be different, again for taxation purposes.

No apraisal needed when i got my plates earlier this month. 84 Interceptor.

From what it sounds like its one of those things that some people want and others dont bother with. (at the office)

I plated the bike today. Just the regular paper work - bill of sale, UVIP, safety and the signed ownership. No appraisal required.

I just restored an 74 RD350 that hasn't been on the road in 30 years, I took a safety, bill of sale and the ownership. They licensed it the same as any car or bike I've ever done although they made me purchase a relatively blank history package.
