Question - SA Helmet on a Motorcycle?

Thanks in advance all.

I think that there are minimal differences between a motorcycle helmet and one used for car racing, and Im just thinking about loud with this, but is it a bad idea to use a car helmet on a bike?

I have an approved bike helmet (Icon Variant for my supermoto) but Ive got a nice Arai car helmet that I may want to throw into the mix for a change. My days of driving cars on tracks are behind me, I planned on selling the Arai because I wont use it for its purpose, but it may be nice to have it around to use on the bike.

I think that there are subtle differences in the design but my biggest worry is that if I had a wreck and was hurt, that Insurance would disqualify coverage because I was not wearing an approved helmet.

My plan is to not to use the Arai because of that - but its winter and my mind is wandering to the bike a lot so I thought that I would ask.

Yay or nay for using an SA helmet on a bike?

They can't do that, yet.

Car racing helmets tend to have tighter eye holes and clips for HANS. They usually are not designed for abrasion, and have have catch points that may twist your head in a slide. they also tend to muffle sound.

For impact, they are the same. I won't worry about this, insurance covers the fake bikers with their nazi novelty helmets, which have DOT and are pretty useless.

For the future, ECE 22.05 will be the standard, in addition to DOT.

[TD="class: form-content"] The Ministry of Transportation (MTO) is proposing to add the ECE Regulation 22, United Nations Economic Commission for Europe motorcycle helmet standard (commonly known as ECE 22.05) to the list of recognized standards in Regulation 610 under the Highway Traffic Act.

The Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators (CCMTA) has recommended all Canadian jurisdictions to adopt the ECE 22.05 motorcycle helmet standard. It is the most commonly used standard internationally and is required by over 50 countries worldwide. The ECE standard does not conflict with existing standards. ECE 22.05 also requires mandatory batch testing of helmets prior to being sold to ensure quality and therefore, safety for the rider.

In a series of independent tests reflecting realistic crash conditions, a 2006 study* found that helmets qualified to the US Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 218 (known as DOT) and helmets qualified to both DOT and ECE provide better protection as measured in those particular laboratory tests than helmets qualified to the British Standards Institute and Snell. However, the same author notes that research has never shown helmets qualified to one standard to be significantly better or worse in actual crash protection.

Recognizing the ECE 22.05 motorcycle helmet standard will enable motorcycle drivers and passengers to have greater choice in selecting a motorcycle helmet. It will also allow Ontario to be aligned with efforts to move towards international harmonization of helmet standards.
