Powder Coating

what is the normal, average cost to have a bike frame, front and rear rims, and a few tidbits powder coated ?

Not looking for anything fancy, black for everything, and possibly white for the rims.

everything needs to be prepped (sandblasted) and then powder coated.

I can't believe some of the pricing I am getting, some are quoting me more than what the bike is worth.....

Cheers

If it's going to be on the high side, I will just sand and spray paint as I did on my last bike.....

Total coating in stoney creek will probably be the cheapest and the quality is good. Just make sure to show them twice any holes that you want taped off as they are not the best for that.

So these guys need wheel bearings already removed and holes taped ?

I just dropped off my bike at Johnny's and he did everything, taped it up perfectly disassemble/reassemble it for very cheap.

I have to get 2 small pc's powdered on my bike as well, just a simple black. GateKeeper let me know your reply from Johnny maybe I can toss my parts into your mix (I'll pay for my stuff of course) just may make it easier as we both want black.

For 360 I had the following done in satin black on my GS400

Frame (and the mounting brackets)
Swing arm
Fork Lowers
Hand rail
a strut from the swing arm
Top tripple TREE

Do you have a before/after thread on this bike build?
Would love to see it.

Thanks to all that have responded, and the pictures and the references.....

But it seems the cost to do this, on a 30 year old bike is showing to be more, than what the bike is worth, it's not a bike I planned on selling but rebuilding for myself, it just don't seem to be worth it in the long run. Seems I will have to take the same route I did on my other rebuild and rattle can the frame and all other items that need to be done.

I guess the cost to do this was more than I had thought it would be, not saying the prices are high or unreasonable, just for me they are not what I want to spend....

Cheers

my rattle can paint job turned out ok on the last frame....

Mina - very tasteful and nice bikes in those pictures! very well done.

GateKeeper - I hear exactly what you are saying, I guess this is more for a proud owner than a wallet, the two do not always go together. Have a friend who powder-coated his bicycle frame - in all fairness he used it wintertime but I don't know if the cost can be justified without your heart being into it.

It comes down to the dollar, 500 plus dollars spent on a bike that will not be worth more than 2 grand in the end, does not make sense, if I was doing a bike that had a higher dollar value in the end, then yes it would get the powder coating for sure. the bike still needs new tires, battery, plastics, painting, seat, and so on....

There is still time, I might have a change of heart, who knows....I will leave this until the end, plenty to clean up, refurbish, change, fix and so on, before parts are bolted back to the frame.....engine alone is gonna cost me a few bucks to have it just right....

Once more, Thanks to all for their responses...

Cheers

Just out of curiosity, how much were you expecting to pay?

Not really sure, what I was expecting, but so far I am seeing 150 per rim, and 2-300 for the frame.....

maybe on a bike that is worth 7-15 thousand I could see the justification, but on a bike that would top out at 2-3 grand at most, it's not cost effective....

As I said the prices could be fair and just, but not on a old bike that has a small value, and that value will not increase with a 500 dollar powder coating job added.

I was at a car show last year, and bad for me that I lost the guys card, but they were doing car rims at 50 per rim, that was reasonable in my opinion.

I guess prices have gone up since then....

The beer sounds great......as soon as I have the plastics ready for paint, I will be down.....then again since there is beer involved I just might be down sooner......

I will check out your recommendation....
