Plastic gas tanks

Legislation to include ethanol in fuel isnt good for many people, except corn farmers.

I recently saw a documentary on corn and I was surprised that they actually use corn to make the ethanol. I always thought they used the "leftovers' like the stalks etc. Plus, the farmer (in the U.S.) doesn't make any money on the corn itself. All of his income is from the government subsidy. WTF

I would think the engine management system (computer) would change the amount of fuel injected in order to compensate for this but maybe not?
Unfortunately, at least in the case my of R6's I've owned, the computer only compensates for air temperature and elevation changes. It does NOT take a reading from the O2 sensor and adjust fueling to compensate for a change in fuels, state of tune, etc.

The Power Commander AutoTune was brought out to fix that problem :)

Ethanol is a real problem in marine applications. With the USEPA going to 15% Ethanol, it's why a waiver was applied for and granted. I'm not sure how effective it will be. Most "premium" fuel does not have ethanol, and even some regular across the country does not have ethanol. Ethanol is blended not at the refinery but further along in the process, so at a distributor. The blend must be 5% across the entire fuel for Canada at a max of 10%, so most of the Ethanol is mixed in at 10% in urban centres in the regular fuel. This gives enough of a blend to make up the 5% total across the country.
(The 5% you see in the mid grade is just a product of the 10% in 87octane, 0% in 91 octane, blended at the pump gives 5% in the 89 octane)

The reason the US had to go to 15% was not because the EPA really wanted to increase the amount by % in the fuel, but because they had been mandated to increase the volume of Ethanol used. E85 has not taken off as expected (though more in the US than Canada). Cars are becoming more efficient so at 10% they had hit a blendwall and could not add any more volume without increasing the ratio.

Manufacturers of engines are not particularly happy with the decision. Farmers and alcohol producers sure.

I'm 99.999% sure that Shell gas(even the 91 forget what its called) now has ethanol in it as of mid last year.

They just haven't all the stickers at the pumps

I confirmed with Shell technical support today that all V-Power 91 octane sold in Canada remains ethanol-free.

Ducati, Guzzi, Aprilia, KTM are all experiencing these probs.

My own bike has this issue a little.
The front tank mount takes some muscle to line up. It's about a 1/16th of an inch out of place.
KTM won't recall them, and tanks are a grand.
:(

Have the gas cap open and it will allign try it.

WooHoo! Thanks for confirming.

Hadn't tried that. Between my adjustable tank mounts and a little bit of leverage with a padded screwdriver I've always gotten it fitted without issue but I will try that next time the tank is up.

Im afraid to lift mine at all but probably have to soon for plugs and an air filter.

It might be a good idea to drain the tank of all the gas and let it sit outside in the scorching sun all day to boil the ethanol out of the plastic.

I would think it sitting in the sun all day would just expand the tank more ;) lol

As is mine. I installed adjustable rear tank mounts. The holes that attach the mounts to the bottom of the tank are elongated so you loosely install them, lower the tank, get the front bolt in, then reach under and tighten the rear mounts into whatever placement they are in;

PS - Amazing how many SD's I've run into or heard about since buying one... I NEVER saw one on the road or knew anyone that had one... I ran into 3 others within a month of getting mine last year.

Yeah I was watchin the sd forums when the guy made those mounts they had a good discussion on the subject. I might order them up preemptively. Maybe grab the airbox too, though the bike really doesn't need any more power.

I just installed the airbox too (and removed the secondary butterfly valves, stepper motor, and SAS system, then shut off the SAS and O2 sensors in the ECU and installed the Akra map with TuneECU). I've got Yosh pipes and find that with the pipes and the airbox that the response is noticeably crisper, the surging throttle at close is greatly reduced, as is the engine compression braking. I'm VERY happy with the mods.

Mine came with the factory akra system and their map (and other R-specific goodies) so the performance is all there. Ive learned to ride it with the snappy throttle response; most others like to throw money at the 'problem'.

I thought about the mods but then the bike runs so great and responsive now, I'm better off leaving it be...

Oh and regarding SAS removal, I dont want mine to stop popping flames when downshifting so my SAS is staying put! :)

Is it an R?

I got quite used to the throttle but this is nicer if in town. As mentioned; the throttle seems crisper due to the engine breathing and not being corked up by the stupid rearward facing snorkel, and dare I say I love the look of being able to see through the bike instead of a big black plastic airbox.

As for the SAS, fair enough (love the flames) but the Motohooligan Motobox requires the SAS to be removed (or at least disconnected and blocked off and shut off in the ECU).

The popping and flames i get out of the exhaust on deceleration... Did yours do it before you blocked off the SAS?

Mine did, and now that the SAS is removed it still does it, but not as often... or as loud.
