Just got back from an extended vacation. Anyone else ever go there? Did the Inca trail, winding up in Machu Picchu. Then went and hung around deep in the jungle for a while. Visited Lima, Cusco and a few other towns. Totally amazing and the trip of a lifetime.

4 days on the actual trail, and its only done with organized groups with porters now. Give yourself 2 weeks to have time to enjoy more of the country. We did our trip with G-Adventures. Highly recommended.

I presumed this Inca trail must be some kind of offroad bike trail. But maybe I was being optimistic. Perhaps this is just where we talk about our non-bike related vacations?
Some recent trips I've taken are: Hawaii, Vegas, Chicago, and NY. Enjoyed them all. Hawaii was probably the best for me.
Yes, G-Adventures was who we went with. Fantastic company. They really looked after us. We did the trail in three days, giving us the opportunity to stay in a hotel in town on the third night (thank you, Lord) and went back and explored Machu Picchu on the fourth day. Great food, great people.
I went with my wife and two kids (20 and 22). The trail was one of the most challenging things I've ever done. At times I thought that I was going to die (day 2 dead woman's pass), but I enjoyed every minute of the incredible vistas along the way.

I was getting to that. My first thought was calling this thread "The Motorcycles of Peru". I have a lot of pictures but have a heck of a time loading them on this site. Their bikes are small and they are serious and needed inexpensive transportation. I saw a lot of old beat up bikes that they keep together with tape and wire. A lot of newer ones as well. Not a lot of name brands that I recognized.
Great blog. Pretty much mirrored our journey, except no one got sick, thank God. I highly recommend that if anyone goes there to continue on to the Tambopata Ecolodge. We'll never forget the experiences, like when our guide coaxed a Tarantula that was larger than my hand out from under a rotten log. When we went out looking for Caymans in the middle of the night, I was totaly taken aback by the night sky, where you can see the Milky Way in all its majesty.

Yeah, Tambopata Ecolodge was awesome. I heard that G bought it recently. Great way to relax after the hike on the Inca Trail.
I referenced Spain & Slovenia to bring "motorcycle related" to this thread. Also Puerto Moldinado, the town you fly to before heading up the Tambopata, has about 20 motorcycles for every car. Half of them are motorcycle taxis, often with women with groceries on the back. Wild west with bikes instead of horses.
