Open primary drive on a Shadow 750

Which year Shadow do you have?
The year actually does make a difference, shaft/chain.
The amount of money and time to do a custom belt conversion is not even worth it.

what's the use? on a ****** 750 shadow?

save your money and go get something with a belt that came from a factory.

On a H-D, you can do this, because the engine is separate from the gearbox.

I don't know the specifics of that particular bike, but generally, Honda doesn't build their transverse engines/transmissions that way, nor does any other Japanese manufacturer. It's all built into a single unit. Gold Wings are an exception because of the lengthwise engine ... but those are more like automotive drivetrains than motorcycle drivetrains anyway.

In short: no can do.

These new shaft drive are great, low maintenance and massive torque.
Although, belt looks nice.
Putting a belt on a 750 would be useless too because it needs the torque, other wise it would be a more underpowered bike. lol

Motorhead: That's what I'm saying,he should put that money towards a bike that was made with belt.

Brian: The Shadows did come chain driven before 2006.

I think there might be some confusion in terms here..primary drive usually means the connection between the crank and the gearbox..whatever that might be. Final drive is the connection between the gearbox and the rear wheel. Probably some clarification is in order.

I think you are confused as to which type of drive allows the greatest amount of torque to get to the rear wheel. Chain or belt don't require a direction change, so in fact shaft drives inhibit full torque potential.

Oops. My mistake. LOL Should've re-read it.

Invictus is right ... I made an assumption that the original poster knew what the term meant and explained it literally. The primary drive is the connection between the engine and the gearbox (actually, the clutch basket). The final drive is the connection between the gearbox output shaft and the rear wheel.

I have since done a minor amount of investigation. Lacking any idea of what model year bike that the OP is talking about, I took a stab ... 2000. Then poking around on BikeBandit to see what the crankcases look like, and indeed, the primary drive (between crankshaft and clutch basket i.e. transmission input) is gear-to-gear with the gearbox sharing the engine oil, just like any other transverse-engine Honda. What it means is that having the primary drive open - taking the original post's words at face value - is absolutely out of the question.

If the original poster was talking about the drive to the rear wheel then they should re-ask the question with those words.
