Noise coming from front end, just had front barring replaced

My 1995 Shadow just started making a nasty noise in the front end. It kinda sounds like there are playing cards in my spokes (if I had spokes).

I just had the front barring changed about a month ago. The bike made a similar bit different sound right before the front barring gave our completely.

Does your speedo run down and mounts on the side of the rim? My older shadow has it. I would take a look at that first. Mine made a HORRID grinding noise. I though I blew my front bearing too but ended up being the speedo.

Yup, I'll check that out, thanks.

Checked and lubed speedo cable. Its still making a sound, kinda like a ting, ting, ting sound like hitting a steel drum every once in a while. Does seem to be linked to speed or breaking or anything.

Try lifting the front wheel up and spinning it, that might help you locate your issue

My bike is kinda lame in that it has no centre stand and so spinning the tire is not possible without some kinda jack.

I lubed up the actual speeed unit where the cable connects the the wheels. It seemed to take care of the noise for a while. I figure the noise came back because I didn't put the cable back in and the lubed likely came out. Going to try again today, fingers crossed!

Most likely not with it on the bike. If you have rafters, use a strap and wrap it around them and pick the bike up by the frame. It only has to be an inch to spin the wheel. Use a jack and some 4x4's under the frame, just somthing. There's ways to figure this out but when the wheel is on the ground it eliminates all of them (that I can think of). Mabie use a straight edge and just keep placing it on the rotor in different places to see if you find a low/high spot if you don't want to get that wheel up.

check every nut and bolt on the front end, put the front brake on and push/pull on the handle bars, maybe the bearings have settled into their seats. make sure that its not brake related.

Could be the speedo cable inner needs lube and it's binding then releasing inside the cable. Disconnect the speedo and see if the noise is still there. If it's gone, then disconnect the top of the cable and get some lube into it.

Just went for a little test drive . . .

weirdest problem . . . it'll be fine for about 5 mins then.. . .ting, ting, ting. It doesn't seem to be related to anything like apply the breaks going over bumps etc, its completely random.

One other thing, the engine block dips below the frame, is it ok to jack up a bike by placing some wood underneath?

no problem jack away all you want under the engine, make sure the centre stand stays on the ground, both legs.
