Assuming the same insurance between the two anyone have any idea about the difference in cost to own the two? Maintenance, parts, fuel consumption, depreciation over 2 years? I know edmonds has a tool like this for cars (True cost to own) but can't find anything for bikes

My buddy has a 650R and I have a SV cost of ownership is about the same. The true measure of the overall cost boils down to your riding style and how diligent you are with maintenance and repair. He rides faster and puts on more mileage than I do, hence he spends more on fuel, oil and tires in a season than I do.

So no tool to compare same mileage and riding style?

Nothing that will give you a reasonably accurate answer, there are far too many variables - How old is the bike, how many parts have been recently replaced, what quality oil and tires are you using, how often, far, and aggressively do you drive, what kind of security system is on the bike... And that's for both vehicles. If they're exactly the same in terms of these variables, then yes, you can get a reasonably fair comparison. I guess it just boils down to which variables do you think are most important.

I know that Consumer Reports keeps statistics on average cost of a mechanic's visit for the cars it reviews, I'm not sure if the same can be done for bikes, but if you can find that, plus gas mileage plus cost for consumables (Oil, tires, spare parts, the inevitable speeding ticket), then you might have a reasonable comparison, no?

Hard to have that type of tool with bikes. So many different riding styles and roads.

IMO those two bikes won't be much of a difference.

If they were both V-Twins I wouldn't be asking, but since one's v-twin and one's paralell twin I did't know if there would be substantial differences between the two?

Did you get insurance quotes?
That will be probably your biggest cost per year
Every other cost will most likely be the same over time
