Ninja 250 ticking sound on slow down.

Hey all I'm scratching my noggin at this one. When coming to a rolling stop I get this ticking sound, it sounds like it's coming from the front of the engine. It doesn't seem to make the sound if I pull in the clutch or apply the breaks. I know I need to get my valve adjustment done, so I'm thinking it might be them making the sound? I've heard the 250 valve tends to melt in the seat instead of getting loose tho. 36,000km on the bike. Runs really well other than the noise it's making. The chain is lubed and (as far as I can tell) has the right amount of tension on it just to rule out the chain making the noise.

I appreciate any feedback and help.

Thanks!

Sounds like the Cam chain tensioner.
It's on the front of the engine and as the name implies it controls the tension of the cam chain inside the engine. On your bike it should be an automatic adjusting cam chain tensioner.

When was the last valve clearance check/adjustment done?

How did you verify the chain slack was in spec?

Some great info here, if you haven't been already... http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/Main_Page

Not that I know **** but how many ticks/sec is it ?
About one or two every cycle of the front wheel.

Thanks Slap I'll look into checking the cam chain tensioner.

The valve check hasn't been done at all, I've been wanting to do it for over a year now but I can't afford shop costs so I'm taking it to my brothers and he will help me get it done, I hope this is done next month(it's hard to get our schedules matched.)

For the chain slack I have it around 1in. Measured the same way as shown on the faq.ninja site. (Found it when I did my very first oil change a few years ago :) ) I did it myself so I wasn't on the seat when it was done so it's not the best way but it's the best I can do on my own.

On the 08+ Ninja 250r, when you do a valve adjustment you will have to remove the cam chain tensioner.
The below links provide valve inspection/adjustment guide, which includes instructions on removing and reinstalling the cam chain tensioner.
You can inspect and/or replace the cam chain tensioner at that time.

You can replace the tensioner with another OEM tensioner or get an APE manual cam chain tensioner (model KT250)-> http://ape-store.com/shopsite/page6.html

Have fun!

If it is the CCT the ticking should not go away when you pull in the clutch. In my experience the tick is worst coming down from higher revs with the bike in neutral.
The sound also emanates from the top right side of the engine as the cam chain and tends to have a 'clack' sound as opposed to a 'click'.

I needed to replace my CCT at 30k, and after replacement all has been fine.

Depending on how you ride, I would get the valves looked at asap. They usually need adjustment at the 24k mark and if you have waited another 12k pray you haven't damaged anything.

Good Luck

OP, just to be sure can you be a bit more specific about the ticking noise?
Does it tick at idle while in neutral?
Are you sure 100% sure the noise is coming from the front of the engine?
Perhaps you can post a youtube video?

^ +1 Definitely agree.

When your replacing your shims, take your old shims to your local bike shop and swap them for the shims you need. It will save you having to spend 80-100 bucks on the hot cams kit. Be prepared, if it is in fact your clearances, once you get everything proper, your bike is gonna run awesome. Try to record some before and after sounds.

Thanks for all the help everyone!

The clicking sound is metallic like, only happens while slowing down to a stop. I can't hear it in neutral or in first while not moving. I hope I haven't done any damage to engine by neglecting the valves for this long. I can't really get any videos, but I'll keep you all post on the outcome one I get this fixed.

Valves have finally been done. The ticking sound is now gone!

Thanks for the help.
