Sadly, it's just the single bored out to 300, so horsepower is still only 30 ish, which is bizarre since the Yamaha R3 will likely be close to the Kawasaki 300 @ 40hp.

Looks like they want to keep a good margin of differentiation from the CBR500r, as it's only a bump to 286cc to compete with the Ninja300.

Rumors going around are: 30.4 HP, 19.9 lb/ft, 361 pounds
Ninja 300 specs are: 34.77 HP, 17.45 lb/ft, 362 pounds

Will be interesting to see the MSRP difference. Styling on both bikes look much more aggressive than the comical looking 250's.

Yamaha R3 is looking like 36 hp. I seriously doubt 20 ft lbs from a single.
The 250 made only 15 ft lbs.
Strange that they went with a new model, but kept the specs below the competition. Price is $200 above the current US price, so expect $4600.

All this sucks for people who are young and want affordable insurance. This "bigger is better" attitude is such a sore on the face of our society.

Once again there will be almost nothing available for 249cc and under that an adult human being can fit on.

Love the tri-color scheme on that bike. Would prolly look good on the new VFR too.

I have to say that I disagree. It was not that long ago that there really was not that much out there besides the Ninja 250 for someone to start on. Now there is the Ninja 300, CBR 300 (evolving from the CBR 250), new Yamaha to come, TU 250 etc, etc, etc. Then there is the CB 500 series from Honda which is also a great starter/second bike.

It was not that long ago that this segment was pretty much ignored and it was all bigger and better sport bikes.

These newer bikes are not 250cc or less but their increased capabilities allow them to be on the highway better and their increased power and capabilities might help extend their life with their original owners longer before they bore of them.

Motorcycling is a luxury in Ontario. Car insurance is no different for the youth. $3k annual premiums on a shitbox which costs $1k

Truth. Guy at work started here at 20 years old had an 05 audi a4. Was paying 3800 for insurance. 2 years later he just bought a 2014 ram sport fully jammed and now only pays 2000. Makes no sense to me but when I was that age my insurance was nowhere near that high and I had a Mustang gt and a corvette. Insurance has grown to be the biggest scam this province has to offer.

No.

I'm 6"3" and am quite comfortable on 250s or 300s. They have identical ergonomics to 600s. The hyosung 250 is full-sized.

We pay the highest rates in North America, and most parts of the world. These free-market, private sector competition idiots are just enforcing price-fixing monopolies that make massive profits due to legislation. This is also why our communication technology is so overpriced and crappy.
Notice how no politician will even address this in this election. Fat $$$ envelopes work very well in Ontario.

No doubt, 80s had it done right. Traded performance for aesthetics over the decades.

Well, that "KR1S" is pretty heavily modded.

No one knows what the Asian Yamaha R25 will be for Europe and NA, but there have been persistent rumors it will be either an R3 300, or the new RD350 (but still a 4-stroke twin).

There are some awesome Japanese-market 400s.

When I was asking my insurance company about rates last year, the CBR500R would've cost exactly the same as the CBR250R that I ultimately ended up buying. There're more and more lightweight and middleweight sportbikes coming on to the market and are being slotted in to the cheaper insurance brackets.

We have sort of insurance controlled graduated system now for bikes.. newbies get forced in smaller cc bikes due to insurance costs.

Those brackets are bizarre, for me, a z1000 is much less than a 600 supersport bike.

Statefarm? In your case, Statefarm would charge you more to insure the Z1000 then the 600SS

Some go by power output, some just by displacement, some have "sport touring" brackets. My experience is that State Farm is always the most expensive -they wanted over $2500 for basic home insurance where everyone else was $900 or less.

at TD Meloche, a z1000 is a sport tourer, thus less than a supersport. Makes no sense.

That's not entirely true for TD MM, especially when they screw up -- I was just talking to them yesterday, and for me, they wanted $1700/year for a brand new CBR600RRA, and $1900/year for either a Ninja 650R or CBR650F. I told them they are not SS bikes, but TD didn't care/said the 'engine is bigger'.

Fast forward to calling around, All State is willing to give me the CBR650F for $1200/year, so should I go with that bike (likely) TD is about to lose all my insurance business with them (car, bike, and condo).

That's why it is sometimes best to do with a broker like Dalton Timmis -they figure out the best rates from bike and rider, across all the companies.

I've never found bundling to make a difference. My cars , house, life and bike are all different companies.
